How to Add Multiple Photos to an Instagram Story

Two methods add multiple photos to an Instagram story, and the results look nothing alike. Layout, in the Stories camera, fits up to 6 photos into a single frame as a grid. Adding photos one after another gives each its own frame instead. Instagram documents both in its iPhone and Android apps.

How to add multiple photos to an Instagram story with each method comes first, then what to check when an option is missing, and the carousel route for several photos in one feed post. Stories sit next to posts, Reels and Live in our guide to every Instagram feature.

How to add multiple photos to an Instagram story in one frame (Layout)

Use Layout: tap Create, choose Story, then tap Layout on the left. Tap the grid on the left to change the arrangement, take your photos, tap Approve and share. Instagram’s 2026 Stories guide adds two details its Help Center leaves out: a Layout grid holds up to 6 photos, and you can shoot or upload a photo for each panel, so pictures already in your camera roll work too. Instagram’s Help Center steps, word for word the same on Android:

On iPhone:

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. Tap Create.
  3. Tap Story at the bottom.
  4. Tap Layout on the left. Tip: you can change the layout of the photos by tapping the grid on the left.
  5. When you're ready to take your photos, tap Take a photo.
  6. Tap Approve.
  7. Finish creating your Story and share.

Layout also sits in the Stories camera’s Options menu on the left. There, Instagram describes it as taking a series of photos and combining them into a collage, with Change Grid to switch the arrangement. Several of our Instagram story ideas are built on a Layout collage.

Collage: 5 or more photos, arranged for you

The same guide describes Collage, an AI-powered tool that turns 5 or more photos into an animated collage. In Instagram’s words: open the Stories camera, select multiple photos from your gallery and look for the Collage option. Instagram pitches it as a way to share a lot without creating multiple story slides. If you don’t see Collage, use Layout instead. Photo sticker: one photo on top of another

To layer one photo over another, the guide points to the photo sticker: open the sticker tray and tap the photo sticker to add images on top of your main photo or video. Checked against About Instagram: How to Use Instagram Stories: Complete 2026 Guide (2 July 2026) Instagram’s help article on stickers notes that not all stickers are available to everyone. How to add several photos as separate story frames

Add them to your story one at a time. Open the Stories camera, swipe up to choose a photo from your gallery, add any text or stickers, then tap Your Story. Repeat for the next photo, and each one joins your story as its own frame. These are the Help Center steps; Android’s are identical:

On iPhone:

  1. Tap Create at the top or swipe right anywhere in Feed.
  2. Scroll to Story at the bottom.
  3. Tap Record at the bottom of the screen to take a photo, or tap and hold to record a video. To choose a photo or video from your phone's gallery or camera roll, swipe up anywhere on the screen.
  4. Tap Draw, Text or Sticker to draw, add text or a sticker to your photo or video. To remove text or a sticker, drag and drop it on Delete at the bottom of the screen.
  5. When you're ready to share, tap Your Story in the bottom left.

Can you pick several photos at once instead? Instagram’s Help Center doesn’t document a multi-select option for Stories. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Share a photo or video to your Instagram story (no multi-select steps or limit)Not verified Its Stories guide mentions selecting multiple photos from your gallery only as the way into Collage, and neither source says how many you can select. The one-at-a-time route above is the one Instagram fully documents.

How many photos fit in one story frame?

Up to 6 in a Layout grid, and 5 or more for a Collage. Those per-frame counts are the only photo numbers Instagram gives for Stories. Its Help Center doesn’t document a limit across separate frames, and its Stories guide says you can post as many stories in a day as you want. Checked against About Instagram: How to Use Instagram Stories: Complete 2026 Guide (2 July 2026) A fixed per-story photo count quoted elsewhere doesn’t come from an Instagram page.

How to post multiple photos in one Instagram post

Make a carousel. Instagram’s Help Center says one feed post can hold up to 20 photos and videos, which people swipe through as a single post. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Share a post with multiple photos or videos on Instagram In the app, tap Create, then POST, then SELECT MULTIPLE. The steps below are for iPhone, and Android’s are the same:

On iPhone:

  1. Tap Create at the top or swipe right anywhere in Feed.
  2. Tap POST, then tap SELECT MULTIPLE.
  3. Select up to 20 photos and videos from your phone's library. To adjust how each photo or video is cropped, tap it then touch the screen to adjust how it fits in the frame. The orientation you choose (square, portrait or landscape) affects all of the photos or videos in your post. When you're done, tap Next in the top right.
  4. Tap a filter at the bottom of the screen to apply it to every photo and video you've selected, or tap a photo or video to edit it and add filters individually.
  5. To change the order, tap and hold one then drag it to another spot. To remove one, tap and hold it, then drag it to the delete icon. When you're done, tap Next.
  6. Choose Single caption to add one caption for your post, or Multiple captions to add a caption for each photo or video.
  7. You can add one location for your post, and tag someone in each individual photo or video. Tap Tag People, then swipe to find the photo you'd like to tag someone in.
  8. Tap Share.

On the web:

  1. Click Create on the left.
  2. Click Post, then click Select from computer to browse and select a photo or video.
  3. Click the multiple photos and videos icon, then click the plus icon.

  5. To change the order, click and hold one then drag it to another spot. To remove one, click the close icon next to it. When you're done, click Next in the top right.
  6. Click a filter to apply it to every photo and video you've selected, or click a photo or video to edit it and add filters individually.
  7. You can add one location and caption for your entire post, and tag someone in each individual photo. Click the photo to tag someone.
  8. Click Share.

Add every photo before you tap Share. After posting, Instagram lets you reorder or remove items and edit captions, but not add new photos or videos, and likes and comments count for the whole post rather than each photo. One more number: apps that publish through Instagram’s API, schedulers included, can put at most 10 items in a carousel, even though the app takes 20. Why can’t I add multiple photos to my story?

Work through four checks: the device, the feature you’re looking for, your app version and whether the feature has reached your account. In order:

  1. You’re on a computer. Layout is documented for the iPhone and Android apps, and Instagram’s Help Center says it isn’t available on computers. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Combine multiple photos into one on your Instagram story
  2. You’re looking for a select-multiple button. Instagram’s Help Center doesn’t document one for Stories. Add photos one at a time, or put them in one frame with Layout.
  3. Layout, Collage or a sticker is missing. Instagram’s own fixes: update the app and your phone’s operating system, restart the phone, try both Wi-Fi and mobile data, then delete and reinstall Instagram. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Troubleshooting
  4. The feature hasn’t reached you. Instagram says a problem can come from a feature that isn’t available to everyone yet, and that not all stickers are available to everyone.
