Yes, you can add music to a Facebook post, but only in the Facebook app for iPhone or Android. Start a post, tap the music icon, pick a song and the part to play, then post. Photo and video stories take music too. Text stories don’t, and Meta documents no way to add music on a computer.

The table sorts every format Meta documents, and Meta’s own steps for posts and stories follow it. Links, video and check-ins are mapped in the posting section of our Facebook guide.

Why can’t I add music on Facebook?

Usually it’s where you’re trying: a computer, a text story, or an account or location Meta hasn’t given the feature to. Check these in order:

  • You’re on a computer. Meta says adding music to a text post “isn’t available on computers,” and reel music needs the app. Use the iPhone or Android app instead. Checked against Facebook Help Center: Add music to your text post on Facebook
  • It’s a text story. “At this time, music can’t be added to text stories.” A photo or video story can take a song. Checked against Facebook Help Center: Add music to your story on Facebook
  • The feature hasn’t reached you. Adding music to a story “isn’t available for everyone at this time,” and Meta says profile songs aren’t “available in all locations.”

Can music be removed from a post later?

Yes, by Meta: if music rights change and Meta no longer has the rights to a song you added, your post will be muted or blocked from being viewed by other people. Checked against Facebook Help Center: Add music to your text post on Facebook Meta’s story music article (checked 2 October 2026) says the same of stories. Meta’s post steps add the song while you write, with none for a post you’ve already shared, so pick the song before you tap Post.

Music on a business Page

For a business, licensing is the rule that matters. Meta’s Music Guidelines (checked 2 October 2026) say “use of music for commercial or non-personal purposes in particular is prohibited unless you have obtained appropriate licenses,” and that content using music owned by someone else may be blocked, muted or removed if that use isn’t properly authorized.

For organizations, Meta’s guidance on music in videos (checked 2 October 2026) points to public-domain music, its royalty-free Sound Collection, or licenses secured directly from the rights holders.

Outfeed AI posts text, one photo or one video to a Facebook Page, never a profile or Group, from the same chat as eight other networks (TikTok posts publish as private while TikTok reviews the app), but it can’t add music, so songs still go on in the Facebook app.

FAQ

Why can’t I add music to my Facebook post?

Check where you’re posting from. Meta says adding music to a text post isn’t available on computers, so use the Facebook app for iPhone or Android. Music can’t be added to text stories, adding music to a story isn’t available for everyone yet, and Meta’s profile-songs feature isn’t available in all locations.

Can you add music to a Facebook post after posting?

Meta doesn’t document a way: its steps add the song while you write the post, with none for a post you’ve already shared. The music can still change later, though. If Meta no longer has the rights to your song, the post will be muted or blocked from being viewed by other people.

How do I add music to a Facebook post on desktop?

Meta’s Help Center documents no way to. It says adding music to a text post isn’t available on computers, and music for reels, which now include every video you post except Stories and Live, is added in the Facebook app for iPhone and Android. Add the song in the app instead.

How do I add music to a Facebook photo post vs a story vs a reel?

For a post, tap the music icon in the app’s composer, or Add music on your photo or background. For a photo or video story, tap Create story, then Music. For a reel, which now includes every video post except Stories and Live, add music in the iPhone or Android app. Text stories can’t take music, and Meta documents none of these routes on a computer.

Can I use copyrighted music in Facebook posts for my business?

Only with the right licenses. Meta’s Music Guidelines prohibit using music for commercial or non-personal purposes unless you have obtained appropriate licenses, and content with someone else’s music may be blocked, muted or removed if that use isn’t properly authorized. Meta’s guidance for organizations points to public-domain music, its royalty-free Sound Collection, or licenses from the rights holders.
