Buffer vs Hootsuite comes down to what your bill counts. Buffer charges per channel, from $5 per channel/month, billed annually, and its Team plan allows unlimited users. Hootsuite charges per user, from $99 per user/month, billed annually, and adds social listening and a direct-message inbox that Buffer doesn’t offer.

Both vendors rank their own comparison pages for this search, and each grades itself. Hootsuite’s, last updated April 2025, is out of date on Buffer’s comment replies and AI. Below, three team shapes are priced and each tool gets credit where it wins, following how we compare tools.

Buffer vs Hootsuite: what’s the 30-second answer?

Choose Buffer if your work is publishing; choose Hootsuite if your work is conversations. Buffer or Hootsuite is less about quality than about team shape:

  • One person, a few channels: Buffer. The Free plan covers up to 3 channels, and Essentials stays cheap beyond that.
  • A small team that mostly schedules: Buffer Team. The price follows channels, so a new colleague, such as a social media coordinator, costs nothing.
  • A team answering customers in DMs, WhatsApp or SMS, or monitoring its brand: Hootsuite. Buffer has no equivalent.

What do Buffer and Hootsuite cost for a solo creator, a small team and an agency?

On yearly billing, Buffer costs less in all three set-ups we priced, and the gap grows with every person you add. For one person with five channels, Buffer Essentials comes to $300 a year, billed annually; Hootsuite Standard comes to $1,188 a year, billed annually. We compare yearly bills only, because Hootsuite doesn’t publish a month-to-month price.

Disclosure: Outfeed AI makes a competing social media tool. We read every price on the vendor’s own page and recommend the competitor where it fits better.

How we worked these out: USD list prices before tax, no discounts. Buffer bills channels after the tenth at a lower rate; every Hootsuite seat pays the full plan price. Hootsuite doesn’t say whether Standard’s 10-account limit is per seat, so we treat it as one limit for the whole account.

Two plan cliffs shape the numbers. Buffer moves you from Essentials to Team at the second user; Hootsuite moves you from Standard to Professional at the eleventh social account. The deeper Buffer vs Hootsuite pricing difference is the billing unit: per-channel pricing taxes adding networks, per-seat pricing taxes adding people. We compare the models in per-seat vs per-account pricing.

How Buffer’s bill is built

Buffer multiplies one rate by your connected channels, and one social account is one channel. Its pricing page opens on the yearly toggle, so the lower figure is the one that circulates. Billed monthly, Essentials is $6 per channel/month. Our Buffer pricing breakdown covers every plan.

Buffer plans, billed per channel USD list prices before tax. Monthly = billed month to month. Billed annually = the per-month equivalent when you pay for a year. Buffer's pricing page shows annual prices by default.

How Hootsuite’s bill is built

Hootsuite multiplies one plan price by the number of people who log in. Its plans page shows annual rates only and says monthly billing costs more, without a figure. For plan-by-plan detail and the monthly-billing caveat, see our Hootsuite pricing breakdown. Buffer Team sits in the table for contrast: it doesn’t bill by seat at all.

What Hootsuite costs at 1, 3 and 5 seats, with Buffer Team for contrast USD list prices before tax, worked out from each vendor's published prices. Billed monthly = what you pay each month on month-to-month billing. Billed annually = what one year costs when you pay yearly.

Which one should you pick for your situation?

Pick by what fills your team’s day. Planning and publishing across many networks: Buffer does it for less and adds colleagues free on Team. Answering customers, watching your brand or reporting against competitors: Hootsuite’s higher price buys tools Buffer doesn’t have.

On integrations, Hootsuite’s comparison page claims 100+ apps; Buffer’s own comparison article claims 24+. If a CRM or help desk matters, check both directories for your exact tools.

Which plan do you need for approval workflows?

Buffer includes approvals on Team; Hootsuite starts them on Advanced. Buffer’s pricing page lists “Approval workflows” on Team only, controlling who drafts and who approves. Hootsuite’s plans page puts “Review and approve content with your team” on Advanced and up, at $399 per user/month, billed annually. For the five-person agency above, that’s $23,940 a year, billed annually, while Buffer Team’s price for 25 channels already includes approvals.

Which one can you try for free?

Buffer has a permanent free plan; Hootsuite has a trial only. Buffer’s Free plan covers up to 3 channels, 1 user and 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time. Buffer also offers a one-time 14-day trial of Essentials and Team, and its help centre says you drop to Free afterwards if you haven’t entered card details.

Hootsuite’s plans page offers a 14-day trial of Standard, Professional and Advanced “without a credit card”, capped at 10-20 posts a day per organization, with no bulk scheduling. Buffer’s own comparison article, published 21 August 2026, says Hootsuite’s trial is 30 days. On 30 September 2026 Hootsuite’s page said 14, so go by that.

Which networks does each one support?

Buffer supports more: its pricing page lists 12 channels, while Hootsuite’s FAQ lists 9 for publishing. Eight overlap. Only Buffer lists Bluesky, Mastodon and Substack. Buffer connects Google Business Profile as a channel, while Hootsuite’s FAQ covers Google My Business through a separate app. Only Hootsuite publishes to WhatsApp.

Sources: Buffer’s pricing page and Hootsuite’s FAQ. Beyond the list, Buffer gives each channel its own recurring posting schedule in its own time zone, useful for brands with regional accounts. Hootsuite builds Canva templates into its Composer and shows a best-time-to-post heatmap, and its listening reaches sites it doesn’t publish to, such as Reddit.

How do Buffer’s and Hootsuite’s AI features compare?

Both put AI writing on every plan at no extra charge; Hootsuite goes further in customer care on its top tiers. Buffer’s AI Assistant page says you can use it “without any limits” on a free account. Hootsuite’s plans page says “Every plan runs on Wisdom”, its AI teammate that “drafts, recommends, and analyzes”.

Buffer’s AI Assistant lives in the composer. It suggests post ideas, repurposes one post into versions for each network, makes a draft more casual or formal, and shortens or expands it. AI comment-reply suggestions are capped at 5 a week on Free and unlimited on paid plans.

Hootsuite’s Wisdom handles drafting and recommendations on every plan. Its Inbox 2.0 help article lists AI-powered smart replies for conversations, plus a generative AI chatbot on Enterprise only. Its Blue Silk AI surfaces insights from listening.

One correction: Hootsuite’s own Hootsuite vs Buffer page, last updated 14 April 2025, credits Buffer with only an “AI caption writer”, which undersells what Buffer’s pages now describe. For writing help the two are close, and Buffer’s costs nothing to try. For AI in customer care, Hootsuite leads.

Which has the better inbox and social listening?

Hootsuite, clearly. Per its Inbox 2.0 FAQ, Hootsuite’s inbox takes public and private messages from Facebook, Instagram, X and LinkedIn, TikTok comments, WhatsApp, SMS via Twilio and web chat, with up to 13 months of history. Professional adds inbox automation and Advanced adds message routing. Buffer replies to public comments and has no social listening.

Where Buffer is better: reach for comment replies. Buffer’s Community handles comments on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, X, TikTok, Google Business Profile, YouTube and Mastodon, on every plan including Free. Threads, Bluesky, YouTube, Google Business Profile and Mastodon aren’t in the Inbox 2.0 channel list. Hootsuite’s comparison page says Buffer “only lets you reply to Instagram and Facebook comments”, which is no longer true. Buffer’s Community page doesn’t mention direct messages, though.

Listening is Hootsuite’s alone. Standard monitors your brand and competitors, and Professional adds a 30-day Quick Search and 90-day trend forecasting. The full Hootsuite Listening, powered by Talkwalker, covers 150 million websites and 30+ social channels with 13 months of history, and it’s Enterprise-only. Buffer’s own comparison lists social listening as “Not available”.

If listening decides it, Sprout Social’s listening and presentation-ready reports make Hootsuite vs Sprout Social worth reading. Metricool’s competitor benchmarking and automated reports make Metricool vs Hootsuite the pick for analytics-led teams. Instagram-first and leaning Buffer? Is there an honest third option?

If neither billing model fits, Outfeed AI is a third shape, with real gaps. It’s our product, so weigh this accordingly. You run it by chat: ask for a post, check the per-platform previews, and confirm before anything is scheduled. It publishes to 9 platforms: Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest and Bluesky. Buffer connects more (12 to our 9). Outfeed has no social listening, so it can’t replace Hootsuite’s monitoring. X posts are text-only and capped monthly by plan, and TikTok posts currently publish as private while TikTok reviews our app.

Starter costs $29 per month, billed monthly, and includes 1 member, 10 accounts and 100 posts a month. Pro costs $59 per month, billed monthly, and includes 3 members, 25 accounts, unlimited posts and Brand Voice AI. Agency costs $149 per seat/month, billed monthly. Of the tools that bill per seat — Sprout Social and Hootsuite — Outfeed is not one of them at Starter or Pro; our per-seat tier starts at Agency.

On the yearly basis used above, Starter comes to $288 per year, billed annually, close to Buffer Essentials for five channels. For the three-person team, Pro comes to $588 per year, billed annually. The five-person agency needs Agency at $7,440 a year, billed annually, well above Buffer Team for the same agency. Starter includes a 3-day free trial with 100 AI credits. Card required. Pro and Agency are billed from the first day.
