Banned From Posting on Instagram? Why and How to Appeal

Banned from posting on Instagram? Open Account Status before you try anything else. It’s Instagram’s own record of the content it removed and the features you can’t use, and it’s where you ask for a review. If it lists nothing, treat the problem as technical. Everything below sticks to Instagram’s official routes: there’s no legitimate way around a restriction.

Posting blocks sit with suspensions and verification in the account-problems section of our guide to how to use Instagram. Locked out of the account completely? That’s a suspension, covered in Instagram suspended my account.

Why can’t I post on Instagram?

Three different problems look the same from the outside: a restriction on your account, a removal of something you posted, or a plain technical failure. Each has its own fix, so work out which one you have:

  1. Instagram showed you a notice, or Account Status lists a feature you can’t use. That’s a restriction. Check Account Status, then ask for a review if you think it’s wrong.
  2. A post, story or comment disappeared. If Instagram removed it for going against its Community Standards, Account Status lists it under Removed content. That covers posts, stories and comments, so it’s also the place to check if your Instagram story was banned. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Check your Account Status on Instagram
  3. Uploads fail and there’s no notice anywhere. Treat it as a technical error, not a ban.

The causes Instagram documents are narrower than most blogs suggest:

How to check if you’re restricted (Account Status)

Open your profile menu (Settings on a computer) and look below More info and support. Account Status has three parts: Removed content, Features you can’t use, and Request a review. Professional accounts also see whether anything goes against Instagram’s Recommendations Guidelines, which decide whether their posts can be recommended to people who don’t follow them. If you think that call is wrong, tap Disagree with decision.

On iPhone:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below More info and support, tap Account Status.

Checked against Instagram Help Center: Check your Account Status on Instagram.

Android uses the same steps. On a computer:

On the web:

  1. Click More in the bottom left, then click Settings.
  2. Click Account Status below More info and support.

Checked against Instagram Help Center: Check your Account Status on Instagram.

Account Status is clear and your posts publish, but fewer people see them? That’s a reach question rather than a ban, covered in our guide to the Instagram shadowban.

How to appeal a posting restriction

Ask for a review from the violation notice, from Account Status or from Support Requests. Instagram reviews with both technology and people. It says a reply may take up to 90 days and that a request may be closed before it’s reviewed, and some types of content can’t be reviewed at all. If Instagram finds it made a mistake, it reposts the content. Checked against Instagram Help Center: What to do if you don't think Instagram should have taken down your post

On iPhone: from Account Status:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below More info and support, tap Help.
  4. Tap Account Status, then tap Removed content.
  5. Tap Removed content.
  6. Tap the content that was removed, then tap Request a review.
  7. Select the reason why you want another review, then tap Continue.
  8. Tap Submit, then tap Done.

On iPhone: from Support Requests:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below More info and support, tap Help.
  4. Tap Support Requests, then tap Violations.
  5. Open the update we sent you about our decision.
  6. Tap See options at the bottom.
  7. Tap Request review, then follow on-screen instructions.

The Android steps are the same. If Instagram has reviewed your content twice and you still disagree, you may be eligible to appeal to the Oversight Board within 15 days of the decision. Not every decision is eligible, and the board picks only some appeals. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Appeal Instagram's content decision to the Oversight Board

Remove a first-time strike

If this is your first content removal for the Community Standards in the past year, Account Status may let you remove the strike. The strike goes, but the content isn’t restored, and you can’t do it again for a year.

On iPhone:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Tap Account Status below More info and support.
  4. Tap Removed content and messaging issues.
  5. Tap Removed content.
  6. Tap Request review.

Checked against Instagram Help Center: Remove a first-time strike from your Instagram account.

No option to remove it? Instagram says it may not be your first strike within a year, or the strike may not be eligible.

How long are you banned from posting on Instagram?

Instagram’s Help Center gives no standard length. Meta says you can see some restrictions, and how long they’ll last, in Account Status, so check there first. Ignore the 1-, 3-, 7- and 30-day table that circulates online: it’s Meta’s strike ladder for Facebook. Meta counts strikes on Instagram too, but says “these restrictions only apply to Facebook accounts.”

The “Action Blocked” and “We restrict certain activity” pop-ups have the same gap: we found no Instagram Help Center article for them, or for their “Tell us” button. Account Status is the documented place to see what’s limited and to ask for a review.

A second account to keep posting in the meantime only adds risk: Meta disables accounts created to get around its restrictions. Checked against Meta Transparency Center: Disabling accounts (updated Jul 17, 2025)

What if it’s a technical error, not a ban?

If Account Status is clear, run Instagram’s own troubleshooting order: update the app and your phone’s operating system, restart the phone, try both Wi-Fi and mobile data, then delete and reinstall Instagram. Instagram adds that a feature may not be available to everyone yet. If none of that works, report a technical problem to Instagram: shake your phone in the app, or go to Help, then Report a problem. FAQ

Why is Instagram not letting me post?

Either Instagram has limited your account or something technical is failing. Open Account Status from your profile menu, below More info and support: it lists content Instagram removed for going against its Community Standards and any features you can’t use. If it lists nothing, try Instagram’s troubleshooting steps: update the app and your phone’s operating system, restart, try both Wi-Fi and mobile data, then reinstall.

How long does an Instagram posting ban last?

Instagram’s Help Center gives no standard length. Meta says Account Status shows some restrictions and how long they’ll last, so check there. The 1-, 3-, 7- and 30-day ladder quoted online is Meta’s strike system for Facebook: Meta says it counts strikes on Instagram too, but those restrictions only apply to Facebook accounts.

Can you get banned for posting too much on Instagram?

Instagram’s article on disabled accounts sets no post count. It names behaviour instead: posting repetitive content, artificially collecting likes, followers or shares, and repeatedly contacting people for commercial purposes without their consent. Separately, Instagram limits direct messages: if you keep sending after a warning about sending too many, you may not be able to send more for a while.

Does using a scheduling app get you banned on Instagram?

Scheduling isn’t among the reasons Instagram’s disabled-accounts article lists. Instagram’s warnings target apps that offer likes or followers in exchange for your login: it says they can get complete access to your account, and that using them can get parts of the account limited or the account disabled. Its Terms of Use also forbid accessing or collecting information in an automated way without Instagram’s express permission.

Is a posting block the same as a suspended account?

No. With a posting restriction you can still log in, and Account Status shows the features you can’t use. If your account is suspended, Instagram tells you by email and when you open the app or website, says whether you can appeal, and you appeal by logging in and following the on-screen instructions. A disabled account shows a message when you try to log in.
