Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot? (2026)

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot? For stories, posts, Reels, profiles and ordinary messages, Instagram documents no screenshot notification. The exceptions are both in chats. Taking a screenshot of a disappearing photo or video is now disabled, and in vanish mode Instagram says it notifies the other person if it detects a screenshot.

This answer covers both sides of a screenshot. If you posted a story, Instagram shows who viewed it for up to 48 hours but documents no way to see who screenshotted it. Two Instagram articles still describe an alert for disappearing photos, so both versions are quoted below. Every other feature is in our guide to how to use Instagram.

A “no alert” row records an absence of documentation, not a guarantee: screenshots aren’t among the notification types Instagram lists.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story, post or Reel?

Instagram documents no notification when you screenshot a story, post or Reel. Its article on how notifications work lists likes, comments, mentions, new followers or follow requests, and photo tags, not screenshots.

What the poster can see is that you viewed their story. Instagram says they’ll be able to tell, since viewers’ usernames appear in the poster’s viewer list (more on that below).

What about screen recording?

Instagram documents no screen-recording alert for stories, posts or Reels either. The two official sources on this page that mention recording are both about chats: Meta’s October 2024 announcement covered it for view once and allow replay photos and videos, and Instagram’s vanish mode article mentions a notification only for screenshots.

Saving instead of screenshotting

To keep a post or Reel for later, tap Save below a post, or Options and then Save on a Reel. Instagram says: “When you save someone’s post, they’re not able to tell that you’ve saved it.” Checked against Instagram Help Center: Save posts you see on Instagram

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a DM?

Not for ordinary DMs: Instagram documents no screenshot alert for everyday chat content such as text and shared posts. Two kinds of chat content are different: disappearing photos and videos, where screenshots are now disabled, and messages in vanish mode, where Instagram says the other person is notified if it detects a screenshot.

Both are set inside the chat: the sender picks View once, View twice or Unlimited views before sending a disappearing photo or video, and vanish mode is switched on by swiping up in a chat.

What happens if you screenshot a disappearing photo or video?

Instagram says you can’t: taking a screenshot is now disabled for a disappearing photo or video sent in a chat. If you sent it, you can’t view it again, but you can see whether it was seen.

Meta announced the block on 17 October 2024 as a protection against sextortion. Meta’s newsroom post on new sextortion protections said people would no longer be able to use their device to directly screenshot or screen record view once or allow replay photos and videos in Instagram DMs, or open them on Instagram on the web. Checked against Meta Newsroom: Our New Education Campaign to Help Protect Teens From Sextortion Scams (17 October 2024)

Instagram’s older wording hasn’t disappeared, though. Two other help articles still describe an alert: the sending article says you can see “if we detect someone took a screenshot”, and the replay article says the sender “will be able to tell that you’ve replayed it or taken a screenshot, if detected.”

Checked against Instagram Help Center: Replay a disappearing photo or video you receive on Instagram.

Replays only work right after you receive a disappearing photo or video, and only if the sender allowed one. To check whether one you sent was seen:

On iPhone:

  1. Tap Messages at the bottom.
  2. Tap the conversation where you've sent a disappearing photo or video.
  3. You'll see the status of the content below it.

Checked against Instagram Help Center: See the status of a disappearing photo or video you've sent on Instagram.

Android uses the same three steps; Instagram publishes none for its website.

Does vanish mode notify screenshots?

Yes, if Instagram detects the screenshot. Instagram’s vanish mode article says someone can take a screenshot or screen recording of a message before it disappears, and adds: “You’ll receive a notification if we detect they take a screenshot.” It mentions no notification for screen recordings.

Checked against Instagram Help Center: Send messages in vanish mode on Instagram.

Instagram says vanish mode may be unavailable in Japan and in countries in Europe, works only in a chat with another Instagram account, and can’t be received by certain professional accounts. Messages sent in it can’t be copied, saved or forwarded.

If you think a vanish mode message goes against the Community Standards, you can report it for up to 14 days after it disappears. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Report a message or chat sent in vanish mode on Instagram Vanish mode itself is explained in our guide to Instagram Direct.

Can you see who viewed or saved your story?

You can see who viewed it for up to 48 hours, but Instagram documents no way to see who screenshotted or saved it. Swipe up on your story to see the number and usernames of the people who viewed each photo or video. Only you can see that list, and because the view count includes replays, it can be higher than the number of names.

Later on, the list is reached through your archive:

On iPhone: more than 24 hours after posting:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below How you use Instagram, tap Archive.
  4. Scroll to the story you want to see viewer info on.
  5. Tap the story and swipe up on the screen.

Checked against Instagram Help Center: How to tell who's seen your Instagram story.

The Android steps are identical. The viewer list outlasts the story itself: see how long Instagram stories last.

Instagram Plus previews don’t show up

Instagram Plus is an optional paid subscription whose Story Preview feature lets subscribers “preview stories without the pressure to react.” Instagram says the viewer list and view count don’t include Instagram Plus subscribers who previewed your story. Checked against Instagram Help Center: How to tell who's seen your Instagram story

Plus is still rolling out (its help page says it “is not available to everyone right now”), and its feature list includes Search Viewer List and Story Rewatch Insights but nothing about screenshots. Does Instagram show screenshots to the person who posted?

Not in anything its Help Center describes, for stories, posts or Reels. Saves are private, and Instagram says you won’t be able to see who has reshared your reel or where, whether your account is public or private. How to protect photos you share on Instagram

Choose who sees a photo before you share it, because Instagram documents no screenshot alert for stories or posts. Its controls are disappearing photos, Close Friends, a private account and a resharing setting. None is absolute: Instagram’s vanish mode article warns that someone can take a photo of a disappearing message with a camera or other device, and advises using vanish mode only with people you trust.

If someone threatens to share an image of you, Meta’s Stop Sextortion page advises reporting and blocking them, and points to Take It Down, a free service that helps prevent images from spreading. Checked against Meta Safety Center: Stop Sextortion

Send it as a disappearing photo or video

Pick View once or View twice before you tap Send; Unlimited views keeps a preview image visible in the chat. You can only send these to people who follow you or have already approved messages from you.

On iPhone:

  1. Tap Messages at the bottom.
  2. Tap a chat from your Chats list or start a new chat.
  3. Tap the camera icon in the bottom left.
  4. Take a photo or video (tap the circle for a photo, tap and hold for a video), or tap the image icon in the bottom left to upload one from your device.
  5. Customize your photo or video by adding text, a drawing or GIF.
  6. Before sending, tap the icon in the bottom left of your screen and select View once, View twice or Unlimited views.
  7. Tap Send in the bottom right.

The Android steps are word for word the same.

Share it with Close Friends only

A Close Friends list lets you share a post, note, reel or story with only the people on it. They aren’t notified when you add or remove them, though they see a Close friends label on notes, reels and stories you share with the list. Make your account private

On a private account, only your followers see the photos and videos on your profile and in feed, new followers need your approval, and no one can download your Reels. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Differences between public and private accounts on Instagram Business profiles must switch back to a personal account first, and accounts of people under 18 are private by default. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Make your Instagram account private Follower lists are a separate question, covered in how to hide followers on Instagram.

Turn off resharing on a public account

On a public account, anyone on Instagram can share your posts to their story and download your Reels unless you change your settings, the same comparison says. Turning off Posts and reels to stories, under Sharing and reuse, stops people sharing your future posts to their stories.
