What do emoji faces mean? Every face by Unicode group
An emoji face means whatever people use it for: Unicode gives each one a name and a code point, not a definition. Its emoji standard makes the point with a honey pot, which “encodes for a pictorial representation of a pot of honey, not for some semantic like ‘sweet’” (UTS #51, section 2, checked 3 October 2026).
The emoji face meanings below come from Emojipedia and Dictionary.com, grouped in Unicode’s own subgroups and order. Where only Emojipedia describes a face, the table says so.

Why do two smiling faces share one name?
Because every emoji has two names, and only one can change. Unicode gives each emoji a CLDR short name, “which may change over time”, and a permanent formal Unicode name (UTS #51, section 2.1, checked 3 October 2026).
So the meaning of grinning face with smiling eyes depends on which emoji you mean: the short name now belongs to 😄, while 😁, today’s beaming face with smiling eyes, was approved in 2010 under that name. Both read as happy; Emojipedia likens the beaming one to saying “Cheese!” for a photo.
U+1F604 · E0.6 (Unicode 6.0), 2010 - Expresses happiness, cheerfulness or good-natured amusement.
- Sometimes used ironically to put a brave face on bad news.

Because Unicode standardizes the character, not the picture. Emoji show in your device's own font, so they look different on other phones and computers. Unicode says presentation on phones and other devices is up to vendors, and that the colored images in its own charts are for illustration only (Emoji Images and Rights, checked 3 October 2026).
Emojipedia warns that 😬, 😏 and 😁 have looked very different across platforms; before 2017, Apple’s 😁 looked like a grimace. If a face could be misread, add a word of context.
