How to Upload a GIF to Instagram (Posts, Stories, DMs)
Where should the GIF go? That decides how to upload a GIF to Instagram. Instagram documents three places for GIFs: a Gif sticker in a story or reel, a GIF in a chat, and a GIF comment. It doesn’t document posting a .gif file to your feed; for movement there, post a video instead.
Stickers, chats and comments each get their own steps below. Camera features that get mistaken for GIFs, such as Boomerang, are mapped with everything else in our Instagram how-to hub.

Can you upload a GIF to Instagram?
Yes, in three places, and in each one you pick the GIF from a library built into the app. For comments, Meta names that library: GIPHY. What Instagram doesn’t document is posting a .gif file of your own to the feed, and no Instagram page says what happens to a GIF file you upload. If you want an animated GIF on Instagram, these are the routes it does document:
| Where the GIF goes | Documented? | How | Device |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story | Yes | Stickers, then Gif, then a trending or searched GIF | iPhone and Android app |
| Reel | Yes, where the sticker is offered | The same Gif sticker, while you record | iPhone and Android app |
| Chat (DM) | Yes | Stickers in the message bar, then GIFs | App only, not on computers |
| Comment | Yes, since May 2023 | GIF icon beside the comment box, then a GIF from GIPHY | No device named by Meta |
| Feed post | No .gif upload documented | Post a video instead | Not applicable |
How to add a GIF to an Instagram story or Reel
The Gif sticker does it. After you take or choose a photo or video for your story, or while you record a reel, tap Stickers at the top, tap Gif, then choose a trending GIF or search for one. The steps are the same on iPhone and Android, and Instagram documents them for the app only: the computer version of Instagram’s Help Center story article says the feature isn’t available on computers. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Share a photo or video to your Instagram story (computer version) Instagram’s 2026 Stories guide does describe a basic story uploader on instagram.com, but says some features, like certain stickers, are mobile-only. On iPhone:
- Share a photo or video to your story or record a reel.
- Tap Stickers at the top.
- Tap Gif, then select a trending gif or search for one at the top.
On Android:
- Share a photo or video to your story or record a reel.
- Tap Stickers at the top.
- Tap Gif, then select a trending gif or search for one at the top.

Instagram’s sticker article adds two caveats. It opens with “This feature may be unavailable in Japan and for countries located in Europe,” without saying which stickers that covers, and it says not all stickers are available to everyone or available for reels. If a sticker is missing, the article’s advice is to update the app to the latest version. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Using stickers on Instagram
No photo or video to put the GIF on? In the Stories camera, tap Options on the left, then Create. Instagram says Create lets you start a story without a photo or video; you then swipe left at the bottom of the screen to add a GIF, type something or ask a question. How to send a GIF in Instagram messages
Open the chat, tap Stickers in the bottom right, then tap GIFs to view or search for one. Tapping a GIF sends it instantly, so pick carefully. It’s a phone feature: the computer version of Instagram’s article says it isn’t available on computers, so use the iPhone or Android app.
On iPhone:
- Tap Messages at the bottom.
- Tap a chat in your inbox. You can also start a new conversation by tapping Compose in the top right.

How to comment with a GIF on Instagram
Tap the Comment icon on a post or reel, then the GIF icon to the right of the text box. That opens the GIPHY library, and tapping a GIF adds it as your comment. Meta announced GIF comments on 17 May 2023 and said the feature was “now available globally.”
In the Instagram app:
- Tap the Comment icon on a post you want to comment on.
- Tap the GIF icon to the right of the text box to access the GIPHY library.
- Tap on the GIF you want to use to add your comment.

These steps come from Meta’s May 2023 announcement, which doesn’t name a device, so we can’t confirm whether GIF comments work on instagram.com. We found no newer Instagram Help Center article on GIF comments, so that announcement is still the most recent official wording.
Can you post a GIF to your Instagram feed?
Not as a .gif file, as far as Instagram’s documentation goes. Its article on posting a photo says, in its computer version, “The supported file formats are jpg, png and heic/heif.” GIF isn’t on that list, and no Instagram page says what happens to a GIF file you upload. For movement in your feed, post a video instead. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Post a photo on Instagram (computer: supported formats)Not verified
Instagram’s Help Center answers “How do I post a video?” with its article on recording a reel, so a video you post goes through the reel flow. Checked against Instagram Help Center: How do I post a video? (serves "Record a reel on Instagram")
Turning a GIF into a video file isn’t an Instagram feature, and Instagram doesn’t document how a converted clip will look once it’s posted, so we don’t point you to a converter. If you make the video yourself, check it against the limits in our guide to Instagram video length, and the shapes in our Instagram post size guide. The full posting flow for photos, carousels and reels is in how to post on Instagram.
Can you make a GIF on Instagram?
None of the Instagram help articles cited here describes making a GIF file. The looping feature Instagram does document is Boomerang, in the Stories camera, which takes “a burst of photos that loops forward and backward.” Checked against Instagram Help Center: Tips for uploading, recording and editing your Instagram story
Our Instagram Boomerang guide covers making one and the documented ways to get it into your feed.
Why is my GIF frozen on Instagram?
The one reason Instagram documents is the Stories Archive. Instagram says some stories are changed when they’re saved to the archive, to keep up with storage needs, and that “these changes can mean muting music or freezing videos or gifs.” The changes are permanent and may affect photo stories that use music or GIF stickers. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Archive Instagram Stories or turn off Stories Archive
Instagram’s archive article also says the change won’t affect stories that contain or reshare original videos that haven’t been shared to Feed or Reels. It doesn’t say how to restore a GIF once it has been frozen.
Two other cases have no Instagram explanation. A .gif uploaded as a feed post isn’t a documented format, so there’s no official word on whether it should move. And if a scheduling tool published the post, that tool’s own handling of GIF files decides what Instagram receives. Here is what Outfeed AI does with one:

GIFs on Instagram: FAQ
Can you upload a GIF to Instagram?
Yes, in the places Instagram documents: as a Gif sticker in a story or reel, as a GIF in a chat, and as a GIF comment on a post or reel. Each one picks the GIF from a built-in library. Instagram doesn’t document uploading a .gif file as a feed post: its article on posting a photo from a computer lists jpg, png and heic/heif as the supported formats.
How do I add a GIF to an Instagram story?
Take or choose the photo or video for your story, tap Stickers at the top, tap Gif, then pick a trending GIF or search for one. The same steps apply while you record a reel. Instagram notes that not all stickers are available to everyone or for reels, and its stickers article says the feature may be unavailable in Japan and in countries in Europe, without naming which stickers.
How do I comment a GIF on Instagram?
Tap the Comment icon on a post or reel, tap the GIF icon to the right of the text box to open the GIPHY library, then tap the GIF you want to add as your comment. Meta announced GIF comments on posts and reels on 17 May 2023 and said they were available globally.
How do I send a GIF in Instagram DMs?
Open a chat from Messages, tap Stickers in the bottom right, tap GIFs to view or search for one, then tap a GIF to send it instantly. Instagram’s help article says sending GIFs in chats isn’t available on computers, so use the iPhone or Android app.
Why is my GIF not moving on Instagram?
If it’s in an archived story, Instagram says stories may be changed when they’re saved to the Stories Archive, including freezing videos or GIFs, and that these permanent changes may affect photo stories that use GIF stickers. Instagram doesn’t document .gif files as feed posts, so for movement in your feed, post a video instead.
