Hidden by Facebook: What It Means for Comments

“Hidden by Facebook” isn’t a label Meta’s Help Center defines, so the phrase can mean several things. The labels Meta does document are Hidden by This Page, where Page admins find comments they or their filters hid, and This comment has been hidden. Either way, a hidden comment stays visible to the person who wrote it and their friends.

Who can still see a comment depends on which of four routes hid it, so this guide takes them one at a time, then shows Page admins where to find and unhide comments. Blocking people and hiding posts are covered in the privacy section of our Facebook guide.

What does ‘hidden by Facebook’ mean?

It’s a description, not one of Meta’s labels. Meta’s Help Center documents Hidden by This Page, a view Page admins can open on a computer or in the Android app, and This comment has been hidden. It also documents comments hidden automatically by a Page’s profanity filter and blocked keywords, and Meta’s Transparency Center explains comment ranking, which can filter comments out of the default view.

So when a comment looks “hidden by Facebook”, the useful question is which of the four mechanisms below hid it.

Four ways a Facebook comment gets hidden

A comment can be hidden by whoever runs the Page or profile it was posted on, hidden automatically by a Page’s blocked keywords, filtered out of the default view by comment ranking, or removed by Meta for going against the Community Standards. Only removal takes it off Facebook. Who can still see each one, and how it’s undone:

What happenedWho can still see the commentHow it’s undone
A Page admin, or you on your own post, hid itThe person who wrote it and their friendsUnhide it (steps below)
It matched one of the Page’s blocked keywordsThe person who wrote it and their friendsA Page admin unhides it from Hidden by This Page
Comment ranking filtered it out of the default viewAnyone who switches the sort menu to All commentsChoose All comments in the sort menu
Meta removed it under the Community StandardsNo one: it’s removedThe person who posted it can usually ask Meta to take another look

The removal row comes from Meta’s Transparency Center page on taking down violating content (checked 2 October 2026), which says Meta removes content that goes against the Community Standards and notifies the person who posted it.

Blocked keywords are a Page setting: a Page can block up to 1,000 keywords, including phrases and emoji, and Facebook also hides common variations of them. The filter covers only content the Page created, not comments on other people’s posts or on posts it’s a collaborator on.

Who can see a hidden comment on Facebook?

The person who wrote it and their friends can still see it; everyone else can’t. That’s Meta’s rule for a comment hidden on a Page post, which hides its replies too, and for a comment hidden on your own profile post, where it’s hidden from everyone else you shared the post with. Comments hidden by a Page’s blocked keywords follow the same rule.

How to find and unhide hidden comments on your Page

On a computer or the Android app, open the sort menu at the top of the post’s comments (Most Relevant in Meta’s steps), choose Hidden by This Page and unhide the comment. Hidden by This Page isn’t available on iPhone, where you tap and hold This comment has been hidden instead. You need Facebook access to the Page. On a computer, Meta lists hiding and unhiding as separate routes:

On a computer, option 1:

  1. From your Page, go to the post that has a comment you want to hide.
  2. Next to the comment you want to hide, hover over Options, then click Hide comment.

On a computer, option 2:

  1. From your Page, go to the post that has a comment you want to unhide.
  2. At the top of the comments section, click Most Relevant, then select Hidden by This Page.
  3. Go to the comment you want to unhide, then click Unhide below the comment (or hover over Options, then click Unhide comment).

On iPhone:

  1. From your Page, go to the post that has a comment you want to hide.
  2. Tap and hold the comment you want to hide, then select Hide.
  3. To unhide or see a hidden comment, tap and hold This comment has been hidden, then select Unhide.

On Android:

  1. From your Page, go to the post that has a comment you want to hide.
  2. Tap and hold the comment you want to hide, then tap Hide.
  3. To unhide: at the top of the comments section, tap Most Relevant, then select Hidden by This Page.
  4. Go to the comment you want to unhide. Tap and hold the comment, then tap Unhide comment.

Hidden by This Page also lists comments the profanity filter and your blocked keywords hid automatically. Meta notes that sorting hidden comments needs comment ranking turned on, which it is for Pages by default, and that people with task access can’t hide comments on Page posts from Facebook. If the same person keeps posting comments you hide, a Page can block them, including straight from one of their comments. Checked against Facebook Help Center: Block or unblock profiles from your Facebook Page How to block someone on Facebook covers blocking in full.

How to hide or unhide a comment on your own post

On your own profile post, hide a comment from its Options menu on a computer, or tap and hold it on iPhone; Unhide brings it back. The comment stays visible to the person who wrote it and their friends, and is hidden from everyone else you shared the post with. Meta’s steps for a computer and for iPhone:

On a computer:

  1. From your profile, go to the post that has a comment you want to hide.
  2. Next to the comment you want to hide, hover over Options, then click Hide comment.
  3. To unhide: go to the comment, then click Unhide below it (or hover over Options, then click Unhide comment).

On iPhone:

  1. Tap and hold the comment you want to hide, then tap Hide.
  2. To unhide or see a comment, tap and hold This comment has been hidden, then select Unhide.

Why some comments only appear under ‘All comments’

Because Facebook’s comment ranking can filter some comments, such as likely spam, out of the default view. Meta’s Transparency Center says choosing All comments in the sort menu shows all comments, including those that may have been filtered out. Nobody hid these by hand, and anyone viewing the post can switch the sort.

Outfeed AI has no inbox and doesn’t moderate comments, so use Facebook’s own tools for everything on this page. Its job comes before the comments: you describe a Page post in a chat, and it publishes it to Facebook, and to up to eight other networks (TikTok posts publish as private while TikTok reviews the app), at the time you pick.

Hidden comments FAQ

What does ‘hidden by Facebook’ mean on a comment?

It isn’t a label Meta’s Help Center defines. Meta documents ‘Hidden by This Page’, where Page admins find hidden comments, and ‘This comment has been hidden’. A comment can be hidden by whoever runs the Page or profile it was posted on, hidden automatically by a Page’s blocked keywords or profanity filter, or filtered out of the default view by Facebook’s comment ranking.

Can the person see their comment was hidden?

They can still see the comment itself. Meta says a comment hidden on a Page post stays visible to the person who wrote it and their friends and is hidden for everyone else. The same goes for comments hidden on your own profile posts and for comments hidden by a Page’s blocked keywords. Meta’s article on hiding Page comments doesn’t say whether they’re notified.

How do I see comments Facebook has hidden on my Page?

On a computer or in the Facebook app for Android, go to the post, click or tap Most Relevant at the top of the comments and select Hidden by This Page. It lists comments hidden by the Page plus those hidden automatically by the profanity filter and your blocked keywords. On iPhone, tap and hold This comment has been hidden, then select Unhide.

Why are some comments hidden under ‘Most relevant’?

Facebook’s comment ranking can filter some comments, such as likely spam, out of the default view. Meta’s Transparency Center says choosing All comments in the sort menu shows all comments, including those that may have been filtered out, so switch the sort to see them.
