Three lines, three jobs: that’s how to write a bio for Instagram. The first line says who you are, the second what someone gets from following you, the third what to do next. Instagram allows 150 characters for the bio, and links don’t need to fit inside them: up to 5 go in a separate Links field.

Below: a before-and-after rewrite, examples for personal, creator and business profiles, and Instagram’s own steps for links and edits. The bio is one part of the profile setup covered in our guide to how to use Instagram.

Rather start from drafts? The free Instagram bio generator writes up to five drafts from your niche and a vibe, from minimal to aesthetic, each counted against the 150-character limit.

How to write a bio for Instagram in 3 lines

Give each line of your IG bio one job, in plain words, and cut anything that does none of them:

  1. Who: your role, name or niche, in a word a stranger would search: “florist”, not “flower enthusiast”.
  2. What: what followers get, ideally a topic plus a rhythm, such as “new recipe every Sunday”.
  3. Next: one action, such as “Book below ↓” or “Free guide ↓”, so the link has a reason to be tapped.

Line one matters most for search. Instagram’s August 2021 explainer on how Search works, still live on its site, calls the text someone types “by far the most important signal” and tries to match it with usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places. It advises putting keywords about who you are in your bio, and choosing a handle and profile name related to what you post. Checked against About Instagram: Breaking Down How Instagram Search Works (25 August 2021) The Name is a separate field, so a keyword there costs none of the bio’s characters.

What changed, line by line:

  • Who: “living my best life” could be anyone. “Weekend hikes near Seattle” holds the two words a stranger would type: the activity and the place.
  • What: a row of emoji gives nobody a reason to follow. “Every Friday” says what arrives and when.
  • Next: “link below” doesn’t say what the link is. “Free starter map” does.

How long can an Instagram bio be?

Up to 150 characters, according to Instagram’s Help Center. That limit is for the bio text only: links go in their own field, up to 5 of them, and your name and username are separate fields too. All of it is public to everyone, on or off Instagram, even if your account is private, so keep home addresses and personal phone numbers out.

Instagram’s bio help doesn’t say how emoji or line breaks count toward the limit, so leave a margin instead of writing to the last character. Every example on this page stays under 120 characters even when each emoji or symbol counts as two and each line break as one.

Instagram bio examples for personal profiles

A personal bio doesn’t need a pitch. It needs enough for a friend of a friend to know they’ve found the right person: a name or nickname, a place or a few interests, and one line that sounds like you. Swap every detail for your own; these are shapes to borrow, not lines to copy.

  • Maya · Lisbon by way of Leeds
film photos, bad puns, good coffee
    currently: learning to surf 🏄
  • Dog dad to one very loud beagle 🐶
    slow trail runner, stubborn finisher
    Denver
  • Mostly food, sometimes feelings 🍜
    Toronto
  • Nursing student running on iced coffee ☕
    class of ‘28
    posting the good days

What they leave out matters as much: no “welcome to my page”, no list of every hobby, nothing you’d mind a stranger knowing.

Short, minimal bios

Some of the best Instagram bios are a single line. A good insta bio in this style picks one detail and lets the posts do the rest:

  • ✦ Seoul · film · late trains ✦
  • less scrolling, more sunsets ☀️
  • small kitchen, big appetite
  • ceramics, mostly lopsided

Quote-style lines to make your own

Looking for nice bio quotes for Instagram? Write your own. A famous quote tells visitors what someone else thought; an original line tells them something about you. A few Instagram bio phrases to adapt:

  • still figuring it out, but in good lighting
  • part-time optimist, full-time snack critic
  • here for golden hour and the group chat
  • collecting small wins on purpose
  • louder in the comments than in real life

Bio examples for creators and businesses

Creator and business bios do the same three jobs with less room for jokes. Put your topic or service in line one, plus your town if you serve locals: Instagram’s Search explainer suggests sharing your location in your bio when your account is location-specific, like a small business. Then make the last line say exactly what the link does.

Professional accounts can also show a category label and business contact details, edited in the app under Edit profile, then Public Business Information, where Profile Display shows or hides them. That keeps your phone number out of the bio’s characters.

Through the Links field, not the bio text. In the Instagram app, open Edit profile, tap Links and add up to 5 websites, which anyone on or off Instagram can see. Instagram’s computer help says the feature isn’t available on computers, so use the app. Then make the bio’s last line say what your first link is: a bare link gives nobody a reason to tap.

On iPhone:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Edit profile at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Links, then tap Add external link to add the URL for your website.
  4. Tap Done. You can remove a link by tapping on the link and tapping Remove link.
  5. Tap Back.

On Android:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Edit profile.
  3. Tap Links, then tap Add link to add the URL for your website.
  4. Tap the checkmark (Done). You can remove a link by tapping on the link and tapping Remove link.

To reorder your links on either phone, open Edit profile, then Links, tap Options, then Reorder links, and drag; put the link you most want tapped first:

On iPhone:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Edit profile at the top of the screen, then tap Links.
  3. Tap Options, then tap Reorder links.
  4. Tap and hold a link to drag it up or down the list.
  5. Tap Done, then tap Back.

On Android:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.

With five native links, a link-in-bio page (one link that opens a page of more links) is now optional for most people. It earns its place when you need more than five destinations or one page for several apps; see what “link in bio” means.

For a link that matters for a few days, like a weekend sale, a Story link sticker may suit better where it’s available: here’s how to add a link to an Instagram Story, and Instagram Highlights can keep that Story on your profile.

How do you add line breaks to an Instagram bio?

Instagram’s help article on bios doesn’t cover them: it gives the 150-character limit and the editing steps, nothing on spacing, so treat any method as something to test. Write the bio with each line where you want it, paste it into the Bio field, save, then look at your profile. If the lines run together, rebuild the spacing and paste again.

Our Instagram line break generator has a bio mode for that: type your lines, copy the spaced result into the Bio field, and watch the 150-character counter as you go.

Test your bio before you move on

A great Instagram bio makes sense to a stranger. Once yours is saved, run five checks:

  • Read it as a stranger. Could someone who has never seen your posts tell who you are and why to follow?
  • Count it. Stay a few characters under 150.
  • Test the search word. Ask a friend to search Instagram for your first line’s keyword. Results lean on each searcher’s own activity, so your own search isn’t a fair test.
  • Tap every link from your profile, and make sure your last line says what the first one is.
  • Scan for private details. Your bio, name, username and links are public to everyone, even people without an Instagram account.

A bio that promises a new recipe every Sunday is only as good as the Sunday posts.

FAQ

What should I write in my Instagram bio?

Three short lines: who you are or what the account covers, what someone gets from following you, and what to do next, such as tapping your link. Use words people search for, since Instagram’s search tries to match what people type with bios. Anyone can see your bio, even on a private account, so leave out home addresses and personal phone numbers.

How many characters can an Instagram bio have?

Up to 150 characters, according to Instagram’s Help Center. Links don’t go in the bio text: up to 5 websites go in the separate Links field. Instagram’s bio help doesn’t say how emoji or line breaks count toward the 150, so leave a few characters to spare.

In the Instagram app, go to your profile, tap Edit profile, tap Links, then Add external link (Add link on Android) and enter the URL. You can add up to 5 and reorder them under Links, then Options, then Reorder links. Instagram’s help says this isn’t available on computers.

Yes, inside Instagram. Instagram’s 2021 explainer on Search says the text someone types is the most important signal and that it tries to match it with usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places. It advises putting keywords about who you are in your bio, plus your location if your account is location-specific, like a small business.

How do I edit my bio on Instagram?

Go to your profile, tap Edit profile, tap Bio, write your bio and tap Done (on Android, the checkmark). On a computer, click your profile picture, click Edit profile, click the text box next to Bio, write your bio and click Submit.
