Start a post from What’s on your mind?, enter the link, add an optional update and post it. That’s how to post a link to Facebook from your profile on a computer, iPhone or Android. From a Page, you switch into the Page first, and Facebook may add images from the webpage to the link’s preview.

Links follow the same rules as any other post. If you’re new to posting, start with how to make a post on Facebook, and for everything else, see our guide to using Facebook.

How to post a link on Facebook

On your profile, a link post is an ordinary post with the web address in it, not a link in bio. Enter the link where you would type an update, add your own words if you want, then post. Meta publishes the same three steps for a computer, iPhone and Android; the app version just splits adding your update and tapping Post into two steps.

On a computer:

  1. From the top of your Feed, click What's on your mind, [name]?
  2. Enter the link.
  3. Add an optional update, then click Post.

On iPhone:

  1. Scroll to the top of your Feed and tap What's on your mind...
  2. Enter the link.
  3. Add an optional update.
  4. Tap Post.

On Android:

  1. Scroll to the top of your Feed and tap What's on your mind...
  2. Enter the link.
  3. Add an optional update.
  4. Tap Post.

Meta’s link steps don’t mention who sees the post, but its general posting steps put the audience selector at the top of the same box, so check it before you post. Checked against Facebook Help Center: Share and Manage Posts on Your Profile

Linking to a Facebook post instead

To link to a Facebook post from somewhere else, copy its link in the iPhone or Android app: tap Share below the post, then Copy Link, and paste it where you need it. Meta’s computer steps for sharing a post don’t list a Copy link option, and depending on the original post’s privacy settings, you may not see the option to share it at all (Share a post you see on your Feed, checked 2 October 2026).

How to post a link from a Facebook Page

Switch into the Page, then post the link from What’s on your mind? at the top of the Page’s Feed. On a computer, that’s the whole job: add the link and an optional update, then click Post. The apps add a Next screen with Scheduling options, where you pick Publish now or Schedule for later. Images from the webpage may be added to the post’s preview automatically.

On a computer:

  1. Log into Facebook, then click your profile photo in the top right.
  2. Click See all profiles, then select the Page you want to switch into.
  3. From the top of your Feed, click What's on your mind, [name]?
  4. Add the link you want to share. (Images from the webpage may automatically be added to your post's preview.)
  5. Add an optional update, then click Post.

On iPhone:

  1. Tap Menu in the top left of Facebook or your profile picture.
  2. Tap Options, then select the Page you want to switch into.
  3. At the top of your Feed, tap What's on your mind?
  4. Add the link you want to share.
  5. Tap Next.
  6. Tap on Scheduling options.
  7. Select Publish now or Schedule for later, then tap the back arrow.
  8. Tap Post.

On Android:

  1. Tap Menu in the top left of Facebook.
  2. Tap Options, then select the Page you want to switch into.
  3. At the top of your Feed, tap What's on your mind?
  4. Add the link you want to share.
  5. Tap Next.
  6. Tap Scheduling options.
  7. Select Publish now or Schedule for later, and then tap the back arrow.
  8. Tap Post.

Checked against Facebook Help Center: Share a link from your Facebook Page.

Three things to know before you start:

  • Access. Meta says people with Facebook access can share links from the Page on Facebook, while people with task access use Meta Business Suite instead.
  • Scheduling. For how far ahead you can schedule and every other route, see how to schedule Facebook posts.
  • Posting from a tool. Outfeed AI, which publishes this guide, posts to Facebook Pages only, never profiles or groups, and sends a link as text in the post, without Meta’s multi-image preview. Tag the link with our free UTM builder first, so visits from the post are labeled in your website analytics; Outfeed doesn’t report clicks itself.

Meta’s Help Center documents one change you can make to a link preview: removing it, by clicking the X on the preview image before you publish. It doesn’t publish steps for editing a preview’s title, text or image, so neither do we.

On a Page, Meta says the link preview can include up to 10 images, each with a description and its own destination URL. Its article stops there and doesn’t name the buttons for adding or editing those images, so check what your own composer offers.

Already posted? Edit post, under Options at the top right of your post, lets you change what you wrote, but Meta doesn’t say whether editing changes or removes a link’s preview. Checked against Facebook Help Center: Share and Manage Posts on Your Profile

If the preview shows the wrong title or image

The preview comes from the linked page, so the fix belongs to whoever runs that website. If it’s yours, Meta’s developer guide for webmasters explains how Facebook builds the preview:

  • Open Graph tags set it. og:title is the article’s title without your site name, og:description a brief description of the content, og:image the picture that appears, and og:url the page’s canonical address.
  • Without those tags, Facebook guesses. Its crawler makes a best guess at the title, description and preview image.
  • The server matters. For a page to be shared correctly, Meta says the server must use the gzip and deflate encodings.
  • Images are cached by URL. To change an image after it’s been shared, give the new image a new URL; the old one won’t update while the URL stays the same.

Four of the basic tags Meta’s guide lists, with placeholder values, look like this:

<meta property="og:url" content="https://www.example.com/your-article/" />
<meta property="og:title" content="Your headline, without your site name" />
<meta property="og:description" content="A short description of the page." />
<meta property="og:image" content="https://www.example.com/images/preview.jpg" />

Then paste the address into Meta’s Sharing Debugger. It shows which tags the crawler scrapes, flags errors and warnings, and triggers a fresh scrape of the page. Everything in this section comes from Meta’s A Guide to Sharing for Webmasters and the Sharing Debugger page, checked 2 October 2026.

How to post a link on a Page you don’t manage

Go to the Page’s Mentions tab and post there, if the Page allows visitor posts. Click Write something to the Page and put the link in your post. Meta’s article covers visitor posts in general rather than links, and the Page can remove or hide anything you post.

On a computer:

  1. From your Feed, click Search Facebook in the top left.
  2. Search for the Page you'd like to post on, then select it from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click the Mentions tab below the Page's name.
  4. Click Write something to [Page's name] at the top of the Page and write your post.
  5. Click Post.

In the iPhone and Android apps the route is nearly the same; posting on someone else’s Page lists the differences. No Write something box? The Page may not allow visitor posts: a Page admin with full control decides that under Who can post on your Page?, choosing Everyone or Only me. Who can see your link post?

It depends on where you posted the link. The same link can reach anyone or only you:

Why won’t Facebook let me post a link?

If Facebook stops you sharing, you may be under a temporary sharing block. Meta says these blocks can follow posting a lot in a short time, sharing posts that were marked as unwelcome, or sharing something that goes against its Community Standards. Meta can’t lift a block early, though you can still view posts in your Feed, and it recommends reviewing the Community Standards to avoid blocks in future. On a Page, check your access too: with task access, you share links from Meta Business Suite rather than from the Page on Facebook. Other causes are covered in why can’t I post on Facebook?

FAQ

How do I add a link to a Facebook post?

Start a new post from What’s on your mind? at the top of your Feed, enter the link, add an optional update and click Post, or tap Post in the app. To post it as a Page, switch into the Page first. Images from the webpage may be added to a Page post’s preview, and you can remove the preview with the X before you publish.

Facebook’s crawler builds the preview from the linked page. Meta’s developer guide says that without Open Graph tags, the crawler makes a best guess at the title, description and image, and that the site’s server must use gzip and deflate encodings for the page to be shared correctly. Meta’s Sharing Debugger shows what the crawler scrapes and any errors or warnings.

Meta’s Help Center documents removing a preview, with the X before you publish, but not editing its title or image. Those come from the linked page, through its og:title and og:image tags when it has them, which the site’s owner controls. Meta says images are cached by URL, so a new image needs a new URL, and its Sharing Debugger triggers a fresh scrape of the page.

How do I get the link to a Facebook post?

In the Facebook app for iPhone or Android, tap Share below the post, then Copy Link, and paste the link wherever you need it. Meta’s computer steps for sharing a post don’t list a Copy link option. Depending on the original post’s privacy settings, you may not see the option to share it at all.

Can I post a link on a Facebook Page I don’t manage?

Only if the Page allows visitor posts. Open the Page’s Mentions tab, click Write something to the Page, write your post with the link and click Post. Meta says anyone who can see the Page can see your post, though a Page admin can limit who sees visitor posts, and the Page can remove or hide it.
