For most career-changers, the best social media manager course is one that’s about social media, ends in a certificate you can afford, and leaves you with something to show. HubSpot Academy’s certification is free. Meta’s 5-course certificate on Coursera includes Meta’s associate exam and needs a Coursera subscription. LinkedIn Learning’s Hootsuite path fits five courses into 4 hours of content.

We compared four online social media marketing courses, plus Google’s broader certificate and Sprout’s product training, each on its provider’s own page on 3 October 2026. Choose by the social media manager skills you still need; for the whole career plan, start with how to become a social media manager.

The Best Social Media Manager Course Options Compared

Compare what the certificate costs you in total, not the headline price: subscription courses charge by the month, so the faster you finish, the less you pay. Lengths are each provider’s own estimate.

Free Social Media Manager Courses With a Certificate

HubSpot Academy’s Social Media Marketing Certification Course is the free option here: 10 lessons and 38 videos leading to one certification. Its page doesn’t show the total hours or how long the certification stays valid, so check both before you list it. A free SMM course is also a cheap way to find out whether the work suits you.

The Coursera certificates and LinkedIn Learning courses start with a free trial, then need a subscription; check each trial’s terms before you sign up. Coursera also lists financial aid on the Meta certificate’s page.

Meta’s and Google’s certificates run on a Coursera subscription, and the Hootsuite path and Foundations on a LinkedIn Learning subscription, so your cost depends on how fast you finish. If you want a social media marketing course online with a big name on the certificate, these are the options. Coursera charges $49 a month (Coursera, checked ) in the U.S. and Canada after its free trial; the Meta certificate’s own page shows no dollar price.

Meta Social Media Marketing Professional Certificate

Five beginner courses: an introduction to social media marketing, social media management, advertising with Meta, measuring and optimising campaigns, and a capstone. It includes the Meta Digital Marketing Associate exam free, with one free retake. On their own, Meta’s certification exams cost $99–$150 per exam (Meta Blueprint / Meta for Business, checked ), varying by country.

Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate

Eight beginner courses covering digital marketing and e-commerce broadly. Take it for wider marketing skills; it isn’t a social media credential.

LinkedIn Learning: the Hootsuite path and Foundations

The Social Media Marketing Professional Certificate by Hootsuite bundles 5 courses, including copywriting and storytelling for social, and you earn it by passing a final exam. Social Media Marketing Foundations is a single beginner course. LinkedIn says Premium Career is the subscription that “most resembles an individual subscription” to LinkedIn Learning, Source: LinkedIn Help: Difference between free LinkedIn and LinkedIn Premium accounts, checked and it lists Premium Career from $39.99 a month (LinkedIn Premium, checked ), though checkout prices vary by region, device and promotion. Our LinkedIn Premium Career review weighs it up.

What Happened to Hootsuite Academy?

If a course list sends you to Hootsuite Academy’s social marketing certification, you may not find it. When we checked on 3 October 2026, the old public course address showed only a login page for customers and employees, and we couldn’t find a public page, price or length for the certification. Is There a Good Social Media Agency Course?

We can’t recommend a social media agency course: the courses above teach marketing or one vendor’s tool, and we haven’t vetted the agency programmes that individual creators sell. Running an agency adds business skills: packaging services, pricing them, and writing proposals and contracts. Our guides to social media management packages and freelance social media management cover those, with free proposal and contract templates.

Once you take on clients, check how your tools bill as you add people. For Outfeed AI, the chat-first scheduler we make: Starter and Pro are flat monthly prices, not billed per seat. Agency is billed per seat. Enterprise is custom. Try Outfeed AI for client scheduling.

Turn Any Course Into a Portfolio Piece

A certificate shows you finished a course; a portfolio piece shows you can do the work, so pair every course with a project. Whichever of these social media marketing training courses online you choose:

If you takeMake this
HubSpot’s certificationA one-page strategy and 90-day plan for a real local business, using our social media strategy template
Meta’s certificateA case study from your capstone project
Google’s certificateA measurement plan: three to five social media KPIs with formulas and baselines
The Hootsuite pathA caption bank and two short-video scripts for a spec brand

Label spec work clearly, and present each piece the way our social media manager portfolio guide shows.

Social Media Manager Course FAQ

Is the Meta social media marketing certificate worth it?

It is if you want a structured course built entirely around social media and will turn its capstone into a portfolio piece. It’s 5 courses, which Coursera estimates at 5 months at 10 hours a week, and it includes the Meta Digital Marketing Associate exam free, plus one free retake. Coursera charges $49 a month in the U.S. and Canada after a free trial, and Meta’s standalone certification exams cost the equivalent of $99 to $150.

Do employers care about social media certifications?

We found no reliable data on how many employers require one, so treat a certificate as structured learning, not a hiring guarantee. It shows you finished a course; a portfolio piece built from the course shows you can apply it, which is why we pair every course with a project.

How long does a social media manager course take?

From about an hour to six months. LinkedIn Learning’s Social Media Marketing Foundations runs 1 hour 16 minutes, the Hootsuite certificate path on LinkedIn Learning has 4 hours of content, and Coursera estimates Meta’s certificate at 5 months and Google’s at 6 months, both at 10 hours a week. HubSpot doesn’t show total hours for its free certification.

Is HubSpot or Meta better for a social media certificate?

HubSpot’s certification is free and social-specific, but its page doesn’t show total hours. Meta’s certificate needs a Coursera subscription and adds courses on advertising with Meta and measuring campaigns, a capstone and the associate exam. Start with HubSpot if cost matters most; choose Meta if you’ll run Meta ads.
