Social Media Manager Cover Letter: 3 Examples
What sets a social media manager cover letter apart is proof that you’ve studied the employer’s feed: one specific idea for their account, one result of your own with its source, and a clear next step. Keep it short, and write a new one for every application.
No result to write about yet? Our social media manager career guide shows how to get one.
Social Media Manager Cover Letter Template
Four short paragraphs do the job: their feed, your proof, why them, and the close. Brackets are placeholders: replace each with something true, and point the link at one case study from your social media manager portfolio.
Dear [Hiring manager’s name],
I’ve followed [Brand] on [platform] for [a few weeks]. Your [recent post or series] stood out because [specific reason], and it gave me an idea: [one small test, such as a weekly video answering customer questions].
At [company or test account], I [what you did], and [metric] went from [X] to [Y] over [period] ([source, such as Instagram Insights]). I’d bring the same approach to [the main duty in the posting].
I’m applying because [a reason tied to the brand: its product, audience or a campaign you admired].
My portfolio, including [the matching case study], is at [link]. I’d welcome the chance to talk through the idea above. Thank you for your time.

Open With Their Feed, Not Your Life Story
Spend 20 minutes on the employer’s public accounts before you write; your opening line comes from what you find. You’ll see only what any visitor sees, such as posts and comments, never their reach or analytics, so suggest a test instead of diagnosing a problem.
- Read their last two or three weeks of posts on the platform the posting lists first. Note the formats, how often they post and which posts drew comments.
- Check the replies and the ads. Are questions answered, and how fast? If the role includes paid social, Meta’s Ad Library lets you search the ads a brand is currently running across Meta’s apps; our Ad Library guide shows how.
- Propose one small test, not a rebrand: a series, a format or a reply habit, tied to the post that inspired it.

Before and After: Rewriting a Weak Letter
The weak letter is about the applicant’s passion; the rewrite is about the employer’s feed and one checkable result. Both are illustrations we wrote: same applicant, same experience.
Before
Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to apply for the Social Media Manager position. I have always been passionate about social media, and I am a creative, hard-working team player with experience managing Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. I am confident I would be a great fit for your company.
After
Dear [Name], your [month] Reels answering customer questions drew more comments than anything else on your feed, and I’d test a weekly version. At [company], I ran a similar Q&A series on TikTok; comments per post went from [X] to [Y] over [period] (TikTok analytics). I’d like to bring that habit to [Brand]‘s community.
What changed:
- A name instead of “Sir or Madam”. CareerOneStop, a careers site sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, advises addressing a specific person whenever possible (as of 4 April 2025, archived copy).
- Their feed first, your history second.
- One sourced result in place of “passionate” and “team player”. Our social media KPIs guide helps you pick the metric.
Cover Letter Social Media Manager Examples: Entry-Level, In-House, Agency
Each example is a template with placeholders, not a real letter: swap in your own facts and never borrow a result you didn’t get. Each shows the body only; reuse the template’s greeting and close.
Entry-level
I’ve watched [Brand]‘s TikTok since your [series] launched and noticed [observation]. Last [month], I ran Instagram for [local business] as a volunteer for 30 days, posting [N] times a week from a written plan; profile visits went from [X] to [Y] against the previous 30 days (Instagram Insights). The case study is at [link]. I’d bring the same discipline to your Social Media Coordinator role.
In-house, mid-level
Your team’s LinkedIn posts about [topic] draw more comments than your product announcements, and I’d build a monthly series around them. At [company], I run the calendar for [platforms] and cut our median first response time from [X] to [Y] hours with saved replies and a clear escalation path. I’d bring that rigour to [goal from the posting].
Agency or freelance pitch
I help [type of business] in [city] keep [platforms] active without adding staff. Your last Instagram post went up on [date], and your [product] photos draw the most comments. I’d suggest [N] posts a month built around them, with a short monthly report. For [similar client], I [result] over [period]. Could I send a one-page proposal?
A pitch letter starts the conversation; scope, deliverables and price belong in a proposal, which our free social media proposal template builds.
Pitching clients rather than applying for jobs? Count your tools in the price you quote. Outfeed AI, the chat-based scheduler we make, is one option for scheduling posts for several client accounts from one conversation. It has no analytics or client reports, so build those from each network’s own insights. Starter and Pro are flat monthly prices, not billed per seat. Agency is billed per seat. Enterprise is custom.
How Long Should a Social Media Cover Letter Be?
Aim for 200 to 400 words in three or four short paragraphs. That’s the range CareerOneStop, a careers site sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, says most experts recommend, as of 4 April 2025 (archived copy). Once filled in, keep the template above within that range.
Leave out what your social media manager resume already lists line by line, every platform you’ve ever touched, and any number you can’t source. Prove one or two of the social media manager skills the posting names rather than listing them all. If the employer asks you to email your resume, CareerOneStop says the body of the email can serve as your cover letter, and when a letter is optional, it says including one is still a good idea.
Cover Letter FAQ
How do I write a social media cover letter with no experience?
Lead with work you can show, even unpaid: a test account you ran for a local business or nonprofit, with its numbers before and after and their source. Add one specific idea for the employer’s feed, and label volunteer work honestly.
Should I include metrics in a social media cover letter?
Yes, one or two. Give each a starting point, a time period and its source, such as the platform’s own analytics, and leave the full set to your resume and portfolio. Never include a number you couldn’t explain in an interview.
Do social media managers still need a cover letter?
Not always, because some employers don’t ask for one. When a letter is optional, send one anyway if you can: a short letter with a specific idea for the employer’s feed shows the work instead of describing it.
Should I link my portfolio in a cover letter?
Yes, once. Link the case study that best matches the role, in the sentence where you mention that work, rather than a general homepage. Put your LinkedIn URL in the signature and check that every link opens on a phone.
