Four Versions: In-House, Team Lead, Agency and Freelance

In-house, agency and freelance social media managers share a title but not a job: the scope, reporting line and 90-day test change, even where the social media manager job duties overlap.

VersionScopeReports toManages people?Judge at 90 days by
In-house, soloEvery channel, replies and reportsOwner or marketing leadNoCalendar running, first report sent
In-house team leadStrategy, budget, tools, hiringHead of marketing or communicationsYesTeam plan and workflow agreed

Freelance or fractionalA written scope, fee and termThe client, under contractNoContract deliverables met

In-house, solo (small business)

List the channels in priority order and name what’s out of scope: one person covering every channel and the inbox is a big job.

In-house team lead

Add “lead a team of [number]”, “own the social budget and tools” and “hire and coach”, then cut most hands-on bullets.

Agency account manager

Swap the single brand for “[number] client accounts in [industries]”, add client approvals and monthly results meetings, and ask for multi-client experience.

Freelance or fractional

Write a scope of work: channels, posts per month, revisions, reply cover, reporting, term and fee. Put content ownership and account access in a written contract and have a lawyer check it, because contractor rules vary by country.

Social Media Manager Responsibilities and Duties, Explained

Social media manager job responsibilities fall into six duties: strategy, content, publishing, community, reporting and coordination. The title has no official definition: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no social media manager occupation. Source: BLS OEWS May 2025 occupation profiles index and national data file, checked ; page date: May 2025 estimates, released 2026-05-15 A social media officer job description or a marketing and social media manager job description can list the same duties.

O*NET, the Labor Department’s occupation database, includes the work in two public relations occupations. It lists this task for Public Relations Managers: “Manage clients’ social media accounts, including creating content, responding to stakeholder comments and messages, and monitoring public perception.” Source: O*NET OnLine, Summary Report for 11-2032.00 Public Relations Managers, checked Public Relations Specialists “May specialize in using social media.” Source: O*NET OnLine, Summary Report for 27-3031.00 Public Relations Specialists, checked Neither occupation’s list of sample job titles includes “social media manager.” Source: O*NET OnLine, Summary Reports (13-1161.00, 27-3031.00, 11-2032.00), checked

Strategy and planning

Turn business goals into a plan: which platforms, what each is for, how often to post and how success is measured.

Content creation

Write captions, make or brief graphics and short videos, and adapt each idea to each platform.

Publishing and scheduling

Keep the calendar, schedule posts and confirm each one published correctly.

Community management

Reply to comments and messages, hide spam, and route complaints and press questions to the right owner.

Reporting

Track a few KPIs against a baseline and say what changes next; our free social media report template does the maths.

Coordination

Brief designers, line up launches with PR and sales, and run approvals. Social media marketing manager duties add paid work: campaigns, budget and ad reporting.

Requirements, Qualifications and Tools

There’s no licence for social media managers, so each employer sets its own requirements. For public relations specialists, the closest occupation BLS tracks, the typical entry-level education is a bachelor’s degree, and BLS says employers may prefer candidates who studied communications or business. Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Public Relations Specialists, checked ; page date: page last modified 2026-08-27 Ask for links to accounts the candidate ran, and test the social media manager skills that matter to you in the interview.

Tools to name: Canva or Adobe Express for design, CapCut or Premiere Pro for video, native analytics and a spreadsheet, and a scheduler such as Buffer, Hootsuite, Sprout Social or Outfeed AI, the chat-based scheduler we make.

Some schedulers bill per seat, so a new hire can mean a new licence; see per-seat vs per-account pricing. For Outfeed, Starter and Pro are flat monthly prices, not billed per seat. Agency is billed per seat. Enterprise is custom.

KPIs for the First 90 Days

Judge a new social media manager on setup at 30 days, consistency at 60 and movement against a baseline at 90. Put these milestones in the job description and set targets from your own baseline; our social media KPIs guide has formulas and sourced target bands.

By dayWhat should be trueHow to check
30Accounts and brand guide audited; calendar running; baseline recordedAudit notes and a baseline report
60Agreed posting frequency on every channel; replies within the agreed timeCalendar against published posts; inbox reply times
90One test run and written up; KPIs compared with the baseline; next quarter plannedMonthly report and a written plan

Team leads add a workflow or hiring milestone; agency managers are measured client by client, freelancers against the contract.

Interview Questions Mapped to Each Responsibility

Map one question to each of the social media manager duties above, and ask for evidence: a real post, report or decision.

DutyAskA strong answer shows
Strategy”Pick an account you ran. What was it for, and what did you stop doing?”A business goal and a trade-off
Content”Show us a post that worked and one that flopped. Why?”Specific reasons, not luck
Publishing”Walk us through a launch week, from draft to live.”A calendar, approvals and checks after posting
Community”An angry comment lands late on a Friday. What happens next?”A first reply and an escalation path
Reporting”Here’s a month of numbers. What do you report and change?”A few KPIs, a baseline and one action
Coordination”Tell us about a post that legal or a client rejected.”How they handled it

What Does a Social Media Manager Do Day to Day?

Most days mix publishing checks, replies, content work and a meeting or two; reporting and planning land at the end of the week. BLS doesn’t track the title, but it says most public relations specialists, the closest occupation it does track, work full time and some work more than 40 hours per week (Occupational Outlook Handbook, checked 3 October 2026).

This example week is an illustration, not survey data:

DayExample focus
MondayReview last week’s numbers; confirm this week’s calendar
TuesdayCreate posts and short videos for the next two weeks
WednesdayPublish, reply to comments and messages, meet design or sales
ThursdayMore creation, plus one test: a new format, hook or posting time
FridayWeekly report and next week’s plan
Every dayCheck scheduled posts went out; clear comments and messages

If the manager has reports

The week shifts from making posts to reviewing them: approvals, one-to-ones and hiring. O*NET lists “Assign, supervise, and review the activities of public relations staff” as a task of Public Relations Managers (O*NET OnLine, 11-2032.00, checked 3 October 2026). Social Media Manager Job Description FAQ

What makes a good social media manager?

Judgement more than tool knowledge: knowing what to post, what to skip and when to escalate. Look for clear, quick writing, a feel for each platform’s formats, comfort with numbers and calm under pressure. Accounts they actually ran prove it better than a list of apps.

Who does a social media manager work with?

Mostly the marketing team, plus whoever owns the brand’s public voice: PR or communications, customer support, designers and video editors, sales, and legal on sensitive topics. At an agency, the key relationship is each client’s marketing lead.

What is the difference between a social media manager and a content creator?

A social media manager is accountable for a brand’s accounts: the plan, calendar, publishing, replies and reporting. A content creator makes the posts and videos, often for their own channels or as a freelancer. Many managers also create, but creators don’t usually own strategy or results for someone else’s brand.

How many hours does a social media manager work?

There is no official figure: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has no social media manager occupation. For public relations specialists, the closest occupation it tracks, BLS says most work full time and some work longer weeks. Social accounts don’t keep office hours, so state any evening or weekend cover.
