Who Doesn't Follow Me Back on Instagram? A Safe Check
Instagram doesn’t document any “not following back” list, so the answer to “who doesn’t follow me back on Instagram?” comes from your own two lists. Compare the accounts you follow with the accounts that follow you, check single accounts with Instagram’s shared activity view, and unfollow anyone you like: Instagram doesn’t notify them. Skip any app that asks for your password.
That’s a smaller toolkit than the trackers in app stores promise, but it keeps your account inside Instagram’s rules. Your follower lists, and the privacy controls around them, also appear in our guide to how to use Instagram.

Who doesn’t follow me back on Instagram? How to check
Compare your own two lists. Instagram’s Help Center documents no filter for accounts that don’t follow you back. What it does document are the Followers and Following lists on your profile, a per-account shared activity view and a full data export. Use whichever fits the size of your account.

Compare your Following and Followers lists
This is a method, not an Instagram feature:
- Go to your profile, where your Followers and Following lists are.
- Open Following and note the accounts you care about.
- Open Followers and look for each of them.
- Anyone on your Following list who isn’t on your Followers list doesn’t follow you back.
It’s quick for a few dozen accounts and slow for a few thousand. While you’re in your Followers list, you may also spot accounts that look automated; what a spam account is explains how to tell.
Check one account with shared activity
For a single account, Instagram’s shared activity view is the quickest documented check. It shows the likes, comments and tags you share with an account, and Instagram says you can also see “how long you’ve followed an account, and how long accounts have followed you”. It works on phones and iPads, for accounts where one or both of you follow the other. Open it, then look at the Follows section, which shows when you followed each other, if applicable:
On iPhone: from their profile:
- Navigate to a profile of someone you follow or who follows you.
- Tap Options in the top right.
- Select See shared activity.
On iPhone: from your Following list:
- Go to your profile and tap Following.
- Tap Options next to the profile.
- Choose See shared activity.

Android uses the same steps.
Long list? Use Instagram’s own export
For hundreds of accounts, Instagram’s Export your information tool gives you a copy of your data to compare at your own pace. In the app, go to Menu, then Meta Account (some people still see Accounts Center), then Your information and permissions, Export your information and Create export. Pick your profile, choose Export to device, select the information you want, a date range and a format, then tap Start export.
Instagram describes the Connections category as “who and how you’ve connected with people on Instagram” and doesn’t list the files inside it. The export link can take up to 30 days to arrive, and once the export is ready you have 4 days to download it. Exporting is password-protected, and the file is your personal information, so keep it to yourself. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Review and export a copy of your Instagram information
Some people also see categories such as “Least interacted with” on their Following list. No Instagram Help Center article documents them, so treat them as a convenience if you have them, not as a follow-back list. Does Instagram tell you who unfollowed you?
No. Instagram says people aren’t notified when someone unfollows them, and it documents no list of who unfollowed you. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Unfollow someone on Instagram Your follower count is public, so you may notice it drop, but Instagram doesn’t say who left. Your own lists can also be seen by others, depending on your privacy settings: see how to hide followers on Instagram.
Are unfollower apps safe to use?
Not the ones that ask for your Instagram login: an unfollower app that does breaks Instagram’s Terms of Use and puts your account at risk. The Terms forbid accessing or collecting information “in an automated way without our express permission”, even while logged in, and attempts to “request or collect Instagram usernames, passwords, or misappropriate access tokens”. An app that wants your password to read your lists is asking for exactly that.

The Help Center adds a warning about non-Instagram apps that take your login in exchange for likes or followers. With your login they “can gain complete access to your account”, can see your personal messages and can post spam, and using them can lead to removed engagement, limited features, or a disabled or terminated account.

Instagram also lists “artificially collecting likes, followers or shares” among the things that can get an account disabled. How to remove an app that has access to your Instagram
Change your Instagram password, then remove the app. That’s Instagram’s advice for anyone who has shared their login with a likes or followers app, and the same two steps apply to any app you’ve given access. If you can log in and know your current password, you change it in your settings under Password and security, then Change password. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Change your Instagram password To remove the app:
On iPhone:
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
- Tap Menu in the top right.
- Below Your app and media, tap Website permissions.
- Tap Apps and websites, then tap Active at the top.
- Tap Remove next to the app you'd like to remove.

Android uses the same steps. Removing an app stops its future access to your non-public information, but the app may keep what it already stored.
Does unfollowing someone notify them?
No. Instagram says people won’t be notified when you unfollow them. Once you do, their profile shows Follow instead of Following. If their account is private, only people they approve can follow it, according to Instagram’s comparison of public and private accounts, so following again needs their approval. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Differences between public and private accounts on Instagram Unfollow one account at a time, from its profile:
In the Instagram app:
- Go to the profile of the person you'd like to unfollow.
- Tap Following, then tap Unfollow to confirm.

If you’d rather keep following someone but see less of them, mute them on Instagram instead. And skip any tool that offers to unfollow people in bulk for you: it needs access to your account to do it.

FAQ
How can I see who doesn’t follow me back on Instagram without an app?
Compare the Following list on your profile with your Followers list: anyone in the first who isn’t in the second doesn’t follow you back. Instagram documents no built-in list for this. To check one account, open See shared activity from the Options menu on its profile. For long lists, Instagram’s own export can include your connections.
Does Instagram tell you who unfollowed you?
No. Instagram says people aren’t notified when someone unfollows them, and its Help Center documents no list of who unfollowed you. Your follower count is public, so you may notice it drop, but Instagram doesn’t say who left.
Are unfollower apps safe for my Instagram account?
Not if they ask for your Instagram login. Instagram’s Terms forbid requesting or collecting Instagram usernames and passwords, and accessing or collecting information in an automated way without its permission, so those apps break the Terms. Its Help Center also warns that apps taking your login in exchange for likes or followers can gain complete access to your account.
How do I download my Instagram followers and following list?
Use Instagram’s own export: go to Meta Account or Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions, then Export your information. You can choose specific information, including the Connections category, which covers who and how you’ve connected with people on Instagram. The export link can take up to 30 days to arrive.
Does unfollowing someone notify them?
No. Instagram says people won’t be notified when you unfollow them, and their profile then shows Follow instead of Following. If their account is private, only people they approve can follow it, so following them again needs their approval.
