YouTube Thumbnail Size 2026: 3840x2160 and File Limits
YouTube Help now recommends a YouTube thumbnail size of 3840 x 2160 pixels at 16:9, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. It takes JPG and PNG files up to 50 MB from a computer, but only 2 MB from a phone. The 1280 x 720 answer still printed on many guides was YouTube’s own advice until March 2026.
| Placement | Upload size (px) | Minimum size (px) | Aspect ratio | Max file size | File types | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Video thumbnail | 3840 x 2160 | 640 x 360 Widely reported | 16:9 | 50 MB Desktop upload. From mobile: 2 MB (10 MB for podcasts). | JPG, PNG | YouTube Help: Add custom thumbnails on YouTube |
| Shorts thumbnail | 2160 x 3840 | 360 x 640 Widely reported | 9:16 | 50 MB Desktop upload. | JPG, PNG | YouTube Help: Add custom thumbnails on YouTube |
Widely reported: the platform does not publish it.
The minimum column is badged “Widely reported” because YouTube publishes only one side (640 pixels wide for videos, 640 tall for Shorts) and the other is derived from the shape. We re-read YouTube’s help page again on 2 October 2026, and every figure still matched.

What Size Is a YouTube Thumbnail?
YouTube recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels at 16:9 for a video thumbnail, at least 640 pixels wide, in formats such as JPG and PNG. Only the file-size cap changes with the device: 50 MB from a computer, 2 MB from mobile. Every custom thumbnail needs a verified account.

Podcast playlists take a third shape: a square 1:1 image. YouTube gives no maximum pixel size, only file caps, and says to go big because the thumbnail doubles as “the preview image in the embedded player.” For the video file itself, see our YouTube video size guide.
Is the YouTube Thumbnail Size 1280x720 or 3840x2160?
3840 x 2160 is YouTube’s recommendation today; 1280 x 720 was its recommendation until March 2026. Both are 16:9 and both clear the 640-pixel minimum width, so a 1280 x 720 thumbnail is still within YouTube’s published limits, and 1920 x 1080 sits between them in the same shape. A guide that gives 1280 x 720 with a flat 2 MB limit is describing YouTube’s old rule.
We compared archived copies of YouTube’s custom thumbnail help page to date the change. The copy captured on 11 March 2026 still reads “1280x720 (with minimum width of 640 pixels)”; the next day’s copy recommends 3840 x 2160 and splits the file cap by device. An August 2026 rewrite, between the 10 August and 22 August copies, added the Shorts sizes and dropped GIF.
| Archived copies of YouTube’s page | Recommended size | File-size cap | Formats named |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2016 to 11 March 2026 | 1280 x 720, at least 640 wide | Under 2 MB for videos | JPG, GIF or PNG (BMP too, in copies up to 2019) |
| 12 March to August 2026 | 3840 x 2160, at least 640 wide | 2 MB from mobile, 50 MB from desktop | JPG, GIF or PNG |
| Since August 2026 | 3840 x 2160 for videos, 2160 x 3840 for Shorts | 2 MB from mobile, 50 MB from desktop | JPG or PNG |
The old figure also survives at Google: Google Ads’ video ad specs still list 1280 x 720 thumbnails under 2 MB, as JPG, GIF or PNG. That table is for video ads, not for the thumbnails on your own uploads.
What Size Thumbnail Should You Export for YouTube?
From a computer, export 3840 x 2160 pixels; from a phone, export any 16:9 size whose file stays under 2 MB. That split is our guidance, not YouTube’s: YouTube recommends one size for every video thumbnail, but its file caps differ by device.
| Situation | Export | Why |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio on a computer | 3840 x 2160 px, JPG or PNG | YouTube’s recommended size, with a 50 MB cap |
| The YouTube or YouTube Studio app | A 16:9 JPG under 2 MB: try 3840 x 2160 first, then 1920 x 1080 | Mobile cap is 2 MB; both clear the 640 px minimum |
| A Shorts thumbnail | 2160 x 3840 px at 9:16 | Computer only |
| A podcast playlist thumbnail | A square 1:1 image | YouTube asks for 1:1 instead of 16:9 |
| A thumbnail for a Google Ads video ad | 1280 x 720 | Google Ads’ own ad spec |

Before uploading, view your export at search-result size: detail that reads at full size can vanish there.
How Do You Keep a Thumbnail Under the 2 MB Phone Limit?
Save it as a JPG, lower the quality until the file is under 2 MB, and if that isn’t enough, export at 1920 x 1080 instead. The 2 MB cap applies only when you upload from mobile. From a computer the cap is 50 MB, so the quickest fix for a heavy file is to upload it there.
Pixel size and file size are different numbers. A 3840 x 2160 image holds about 8.3 million pixels, roughly 24.9 MB of raw data at 3 bytes each (arithmetic, not a measurement), so compression decides whether the file fits under 2 MB. JPG discards fine detail, and its quality setting trades file size against sharpness. PNG is lossless: it keeps flat colours and text crisp, but a photo saved as a PNG at this size can easily pass 2 MB.
Two details trip people up:
- Megabytes. YouTube doesn’t say whether its 2 MB means 2,000,000 or 2,097,152 bytes. Keep the file under 2,000,000 bytes and it fits either reading.
- Formats. Stick to JPG and PNG, the formats YouTube names. If your phone saves images in another format, export a JPG first.
Why Can’t I Upload a Custom Thumbnail on YouTube?
Most often, the channel isn’t verified. YouTube lets you upload your own thumbnail “if your account is verified”; until then you can only choose from the auto-generated options. Verifying your YouTube account takes a phone number: YouTube sends a code by text or voice call, and custom thumbnails are one of the features it unlocks.
If you’re verified and it still fails, check these, all drawn from YouTube Help:
- A daily limit. If you see “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached,” try again in 24 hours. Limits vary by country or region and channel history; phone-verified channels get a lower daily limit than channels with advanced feature access.
- Strikes. Community Guidelines strikes affect how many custom thumbnails you can upload, and repeat offenses can remove custom thumbnail privileges for 30 days.
- A Short, on a phone. Shorts thumbnails can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer.
- The file. Over 2 MB from mobile or 50 MB from a computer, or narrower than 640 pixels.
To see whether custom thumbnails are switched on for your channel:
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Click Settings.
- Click Channel.
- Click Feature eligibility.
You’ll see “Enabled” next to the features you have. Custom thumbnails are an intermediate feature, unlocked by phone verification.
Checked against YouTube Help: Learn about feature access for YouTube Creators and Add custom thumbnails on YouTube.
Uploaded but not showing? YouTube says thumbnail changes may take time to appear, and it may turn off custom thumbnails in some search results it considers inappropriate for viewers.
How Do You Add a Custom Thumbnail in YouTube Studio?
On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio, select Content, click the edit icon on your video, then under “Thumbnail” click Upload file and save. The phone apps work for regular videos but not Shorts. The steps follow YouTube Help’s wording; Android, iPhone and iPad share them.
On a computer (YouTube Studio)
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- From the left menu, select Content.
- Go to the video you’d like to edit and click the edit icon.
- Below “Thumbnail,” click Upload file to use an image from your device, or select Get suggestions to generate one.
- Click Save.
For a Short, select Shorts at the top of the Content page, open the Short the same way and click Upload file below “Thumbnail”; YouTube recommends a 9:16 image.
In the YouTube Studio app (Android, iPhone and iPad)
- Open the YouTube Studio app.
- From the bottom menu, tap Content.
- Select the video you want to edit.
- Tap Edit, then Edit thumbnail.
- Tap Custom thumbnail to use an image from your device, or select an auto-generated thumbnail.
- Confirm your selection and tap Select, then tap Save.
In the YouTube app (Android, iPhone and iPad)
- Open the YouTube app.
- Tap your profile picture, then Your videos.
- Next to the video, tap More, then Edit, then Edit thumbnail.
- Tap Custom thumbnail to use an image from your device, or select an auto-generated thumbnail.
- Confirm your selection and tap Select, then tap Save.

Do Shorts Thumbnails Use a Different Size?
Yes. YouTube Help recommends 2160 x 3840 pixels at 9:16 for Shorts, with a minimum height of 640 pixels, up to 50 MB. You can add one only in YouTube Studio on a computer, either while uploading the Short or afterwards.
A related rule covers vertical videos: give a vertical video a 16:9 custom thumbnail and YouTube replaces it with an auto-generated 4:5 one on the home, explore and subscription pages, though yours still shows on the watch feed, in watch history and on non-mobile platforms. The frame size, length limit and safe zone for vertical video are in our YouTube Shorts dimensions guide.
How Do You Resize an Image to the YouTube Thumbnail Size?
Open our image resizer with a YouTube thumbnail preset, choose Video thumbnail under YouTube in the platform preset menu, and add your image: it outputs 3840 x 2160 pixels in your browser, and the image never leaves your device. It shows the exported file’s size, so you can check it against the 2 MB mobile limit.
- Crop to fill fills the 16:9 frame; drag the image to choose what stays. Fit without cropping keeps the whole image and pads the rest with a colour you pick.
- Pick JPEG and lower the quality slider if the file is too heavy. The tool also flags any format YouTube doesn’t list.
Need another 16:9 size? The aspect ratio calculator converts 16:9 to pixels at any width, or checks a size you already have. Both are among our free tools, with no account needed, alongside a YouTube title generator and a YouTube description generator for the words.
Can Outfeed AI Upload Your YouTube Videos?
Yes, Outfeed AI uploads the video itself, but it doesn’t add custom thumbnails, so you set yours in YouTube Studio. From one chat, Outfeed uploads to YouTube with your title (up to 100 characters), description, privacy setting and made-for-kids answer, and it can post to eight other networks in the same conversation; TikTok posts currently publish as private while TikTok reviews Outfeed’s app. There’s no separate Shorts mode: YouTube decides what counts as a Short.
Outfeed publishes at the time you pick instead of using YouTube’s scheduler. If the thumbnail must be in place the moment a video goes public, schedule that video in YouTube Studio, or publish it from Outfeed as Private, add the thumbnail, then set it to Public. The best time to post on YouTube helps you pick the slot.
Upload your next YouTube video with Outfeed AI.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a YouTube thumbnail 16:9?
Yes, for regular videos. YouTube Help recommends a 16:9 thumbnail at 3840 x 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. Shorts are the exception: YouTube recommends 9:16 at 2160 x 3840. Podcast playlists take a square 1:1 image instead.
What is the maximum file size for a YouTube thumbnail?
It depends on the device. YouTube Help allows 50 MB from a computer for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails, but only 2 MB for video thumbnails uploaded from mobile (10 MB for podcasts). If a phone upload fails, save a lower-quality JPG or upload from a computer.
Should a YouTube thumbnail be JPG or PNG?
Either. YouTube Help recommends image formats such as JPG or PNG. JPG usually makes a smaller file from a photo, which helps with the 2 MB limit for phone uploads, while PNG keeps flat graphics and text crisp but gets heavy at 3840 x 2160. Older guides also list GIF or BMP because YouTube’s own page once named them.
What size is a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?
YouTube Help recommends 2160 x 3840 pixels at 9:16, with a minimum height of 640 pixels, and custom Shorts thumbnails can currently be added only in YouTube Studio on a computer. For the rest of the vertical specs, see YouTube Shorts dimensions.
What is the YouTube thumbnail size in inches or centimetres?
It has no physical size: YouTube specifies thumbnails in pixels only. For inches, divide pixels by DPI: at 300 DPI, 3840 x 2160 pixels is 12.8 x 7.2 inches (about 32.5 x 18.3 cm), while at 72 DPI the same image is 53.3 x 30 inches. Setting the canvas in pixels skips the conversion.
