How to Make a Twitter Thread on X (Steps and Tips)
How to make a Twitter thread on X: start a post, tap or click the plus icon to add the next one, repeat until the thread is written, then select Post all. The plus icon highlights only after you type something. In X’s words, a thread is “a series of connected posts from one person”. Older guides say Tweet all; the button is Post all now, one of many labels that changed when Twitter became X. Threads also behave differently once posted: once a thread reaches four posts, X shortens it in timelines behind a Show this thread option, which shapes how you should write the opening post.

How to make a Twitter thread on X
Write the first post, add each next one with the plus icon, then select Post all. The iPhone and Android apps share the same four steps; on x.com you start from the Post button. If a post runs over the character limit, X highlights the extra text before you post.
In the X app on iPhone:
- Tap the compose icon to draft a new post.
- To add another post(s), tap the highlighted plus icon (the icon will highlight once you have entered in text).
- To delete any of your posts, tap the gray delete icon. To delete the entire thread, tap the blue delete icon.
- When you have finished adding all the posts you'd like included in your thread, tap Post all to post.

X’s Android steps are word for word the same. On a computer:
On x.com (computer):
- Click the Post button to draft a new post.
- To add another post(s), click the highlighted plus icon (the icon will highlight once you have entered in text).
- To delete any of your posts, click the delete button.
- When you have finished adding all the posts you'd like included in your thread, click the Post all button to post.

In the apps, an unfinished thread can be saved as a draft that shows how many posts it holds. To check each post’s length first, use our Twitter character counter, which counts links and emoji the way X does.
How to add to a thread you already posted
Open the thread and select Add another post, a prompt only the thread’s author sees. The X app has a second route: tap the compose icon, pull down from the compose window and tap Continue Thread to add to your last post, or tap Select another post to add to an earlier one. Changing a published post is another matter. Editing is an X Premium feature for original posts and quotes: up to five edits within one hour, from the device you posted from, and X says a post can’t be edited once its author has replied to it. Checked against X Help Center: X Premium how to X’s help makes no exception for thread posts, so read the whole draft before you select Post all.
How threads appear in timelines
Short threads stay together and long ones fold. A thread of 2 or 3 posts from an account you follow generally appears in your timeline connected by a line; once a thread has 4 or more posts, X truncates it and shows a Show this thread option that expands it. Checked against X Help Center: How to create a thread on XArchived copy, 4 September 2026 View the archived copy On the author’s own profile, thread posts appear separately, newest first, each with its own Show this thread link.
Reposts, quotes and Direct Message shares of a thread post carry the same Show this thread prompt. Readers who want to finish a long thread later can save it with X bookmarks.
How to write a thread people finish
Plan the whole thread first, lead with your point, keep one idea per post, number the posts if the length matters, and end on purpose. X’s thread help gives no writing advice, so these are editorial suggestions, not platform requirements:
- Lead with the point. Once a thread reaches 4 posts, X truncates it in timelines behind Show this thread, so put the claim, question or payoff in post one.
- One idea per post. Any post can be reposted or quoted on its own, so each one should make sense without the others.
- Number it if the length matters. A count such as 1/6 tells readers what they’re signing up for. If you might extend the thread later, number without a total (1/, 2/).
- Use media where it explains. Each post can carry up to 4 media items, for example 2 photos, 1 GIF and 1 video. Checked against X Help Center: How to Post
- End on purpose. Close with the takeaway, a link or a question. To bring back an old thread, repost or quote it rather than posting a copy: X’s automation rules say “You may not post duplicative or substantially similar posts on one account or over multiple accounts you operate.” Checked against X Help Center: Automation rulesArchived copy, 1 October 2026 View the archived copy
To turn a long draft into numbered posts, our free Twitter post generator has a thread mode that splits text at sentence breaks and counts each post the way X counts. Then pick a slot from our guide to the best time to post on X. Threads are one format among several, and our guide to Twitter marketing covers where they fit in a brand’s plan.
Thread or long post: which should you use?
Use a thread when the point breaks into steps, parts or updates; use a long post when the text reads best in one piece and you have X Premium. Anyone can publish a thread, while longer posts are a Premium feature, and X’s own pages disagree on their length: 25,000 characters on the Premium pages, 4,000 on the How to Post page. Checked against X Help Center: X Premium how to
| Thread | Long post | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can post it | Anyone | X Premium subscribers, Basic tier included |
| Length | Several posts, each with its own limit; X’s thread help states no maximum number of posts | One post of up to 25,000 characters (Premium pages) or 4,000 (How to Post page) |
| Media | Up to 4 items in each post | Up to 4 items |
| Scheduling | Not covered in X’s thread help or X Pro help | X says longer posts can’t be scheduled yet |

FAQ
How do you make a thread on X (Twitter)?
Start a new post, then tap or click the plus icon, which highlights once you’ve typed something, to add the next post. Repeat for each post, then select Post all. Before you post, the X app’s gray delete icon removes one post and the blue one removes the whole thread.
How many posts can a thread have on X?
X’s help page on threads states no maximum, so treat figures quoted elsewhere as unconfirmed. X does document how threads display: 2 or 3 posts generally appear connected by a line, and with 4 or more, X truncates the thread behind a Show this thread option.
How do I add to a thread I already posted?
Open the thread and select Add another post, a prompt X shows only to the thread’s author. In the X app you can also tap the compose icon, pull down from the compose window and tap Continue Thread to add to your last post, or tap Select another post to add the thread to an earlier post.
Can you edit a thread after posting it?
Only with X Premium. Premium subscribers can edit an original post or a quote up to five times within one hour, from the device they posted it from. X also says a post can’t be edited once its author has replied to it, and its help makes no exception for thread posts, so check every post before you select Post all.
What’s the difference between a thread and a long post on X?
A thread is a series of connected posts that anyone can publish. A long post is a single post over 280 characters, which only X Premium subscribers can write. X’s Premium pages put the limit at 25,000 characters, while its How to Post page still says 4,000. X also says longer posts can’t be scheduled yet.
