To schedule tweets for free, write the post in the x.com composer in a desktop browser, click the calendar icon, pick a date and time, then click Schedule. That option is widely reported, but X doesn’t document it. X’s documented schedulers are X Pro, a Premium+ feature, and the X Ads composer. The X app has no schedule button.

X calls tweets “posts” now, and so do its help pages, so this guide uses both words. X is also the one major network where the free route is undocumented, which is why every step below says whether X or other users are the source. If X is only part of your mix, our scheduling guide for all nine networks shows which ones schedule for free.

Table of Contents

Where can you schedule tweets on X?

From three of the four places X offers, and none of them is the X app. The x.com composer has a schedule option that is widely reported and used, although X’s help pages never mention it. X does document scheduling in two places: X Pro, which X’s Premium page lists under “Only for Premium+ Tier”, and the X Ads composer, which is built for advertisers. The table puts all four side by side.

Widely reported: observable and widely reported, but no page from the platform says it. · Not verified: the platform does not publish it, or it could not be confirmed.

“Not stated by the platform” means X doesn’t publish that value. That includes the web composer’s window: some tool vendors quote a figure, but no X page does, so we don’t repeat it.

X does state one limit plainly. Its Premium help page says: “Longer posts cannot yet be scheduled.” A standard post holds 280 characters as X counts them, and styled letters from an X font generator count as two each. Premium subscribers can write longer posts of up to 25,000 characters, and those have to go out live.

How to schedule a tweet on x.com

On a computer it takes four steps, and the option is reported to work for any logged-in account. Because X publishes no help article for it, the steps below are the widely reported ones, and the labels could change without notice:

  1. On x.com, open the composer and write the post.
  2. Click the schedule (calendar) icon in the composer toolbar.
  3. Pick a date and time, then click Confirm.
  4. Click Schedule.

Check the length before step 4. Our free Twitter character counter counts in X-weighted characters (emoji 2, links 23), the same way X does. If the post isn’t written yet, the Twitter post generator drafts one, and our tweet ideas list has 40 starting points. For the hour itself, see our best time to post on Twitter / X data.

How to schedule a tweet on mobile

You can’t schedule in the X app: it has no schedule option. That is widely reported, and it matches X’s own posting steps for iPhone and Android, which mention no schedule option. The native route is the x.com composer in a browser.

On a phone, that leaves three options:

  • Wait for a computer. The schedule option is reported in the x.com composer in a desktop browser.
  • Try x.com in your phone’s browser. Guides often suggest switching to the browser’s desktop-site view if the calendar icon is missing. X documents neither, and we haven’t confirmed it, so treat it as a workaround.
  • Use a scheduling tool. A tool that posts to X through its API publishes at your time, wherever you wrote the post.

Where do scheduled tweets go on X?

On x.com, scheduled posts are widely reported to sit in the composer under Unsent posts, on a Scheduled tab. From there you can reportedly open a post to edit it. X has no help article for that path.

The two documented schedulers have official answers:

  • X Pro: Add a Scheduled column (navigation bar > Add column > Scheduled). X’s help says to “view and edit your scheduled posts by adding a Scheduled column.”
  • X Ads composer: ads.x.com > Posts tab > change the 'Posts: Promoted' drop-down to 'Scheduled'. To change a post there, hover over it and use the three-dot menu to edit the post and its schedule, or delete it.

Can you schedule a thread on X?

X doesn’t say. No X help page states whether a multi-post thread, a poll or a reply can be scheduled from the x.com composer, which is no surprise when the schedule option itself is undocumented. X Pro’s help lists posts with images or video and doesn’t mention threads.

If a thread has to go out at a set time, post it live, or use a tool that says it schedules threads and test it on a throwaway thread first. Outfeed isn’t one of those tools: it publishes each X post as a single standalone post.

Polls are in the same position: X’s polls help page explains how polls work but says nothing about scheduling one.

Scheduling posts in X Pro (Premium+)

X Pro, the former TweetDeck, is the scheduler X actually documents, and it needs a Premium+ subscription. X’s Premium page lists “Access to X Pro” under “Only for Premium+ Tier”. In return, X Pro can schedule posts with images or video for each of several X accounts connected to it. In team setups, everyone with access sees every scheduled post for the connected accounts.

The steps, from X’s help page on advanced X Pro features:

  1. Sign in to X Pro and click post.
  2. Confirm the X account you want to post from is selected.
  3. Compose your post, adding images or video if needed.
  4. Click Schedule post and pick the date and time.
  5. Click “Schedule post at [date/time]”.

X Pro doesn’t support scheduled Direct Messages, and X’s help gives no window for how far ahead it can schedule. If you already pay for Premium+ and run several accounts, X Pro covers X well, but no other network.

How to post on Twitter (X) now, and when to schedule instead

To post on X right now, open the composer on x.com or in the X app, write up to 280 characters, and select Post. X’s help page on posting covers the variations. Premium subscribers can go longer, but longer posts can’t be scheduled.

Schedule instead when the timing matters more than the moment:

  • Your audience is awake when you aren’t. Schedule for their hours.
  • You write in batches. Write a week of posts on Monday and schedule them across the week.
  • You post one idea to several networks. Schedule each version once.

Post live instead for replies, breaking news, threads and polls. Those either can’t be scheduled or X doesn’t say they can. Before adding tags to a scheduled post, read our guide to Twitter hashtags.

How to auto post tweets with a scheduling tool

A scheduling tool posts to X through X’s API, which means it publishes the post itself at your chosen time, and each tool prices that X access in its own way. Some include X on every plan. Others charge extra: Metricool, for example, sells X as a paid add-on rather than an included network (checked 30 September 2026), as our Metricool alternatives comparison details.

Before you choose a tool for X, check five things:

  1. Does it publish automatically, or only send you a reminder to post?
  2. Can it post images, video, threads and polls to X, or text only?
  3. How many X posts does a plan allow each month?
  4. Does each extra X account cost more?
  5. Does it post to the other networks you use, such as Threads, Bluesky or LinkedIn?

Sending the same words to Bluesky too? Rewrite rather than paste: our Bluesky guide covers cross-posting from X to Bluesky, from mentions to character counts.

Outfeed AI on X: text-only posts within a monthly X allowance

Outfeed publishes text-only posts to X, up to 280 characters as X counts them (links count 23, emoji and CJK count 2). Images, GIFs and video can’t be sent to X yet, and Outfeed doesn’t post threads or polls there. You connect X with X’s own login (OAuth 2.0). You then pick an exact date and time, in chat or in the composer, in any time zone, and Outfeed holds the post and publishes it through X’s API at that moment.

Before a post is accepted into the schedule, Outfeed checks that the X account is still connected and that the text fits. One post can target X and other networks at once, with different text for each, which is how the 280-character version and a longer one travel together. You could type: “Schedule this for Tuesday at 9 a.m. Toronto time on X, and write a longer version for Threads.”

X is included on every plan. Starter, Pro and Agency each include a monthly X post allowance; Enterprise has no X cap. Each X account a post targets counts once against it. When the allowance runs out, new X posts are refused until the next billing period or an upgrade. Starter is $29/mo and Pro is $59/mo, both flat rather than per seat; Agency is $149 per seat/mo. Starter includes a 3-day free trial with 100 AI credits. Card required. Pro and Agency are billed from the first day.

Schedule your next post to X with Outfeed AI, or compare every network’s native options first in our guide to scheduling social media posts.

Frequently asked questions

Can you schedule tweets for free?

Yes, on the web. The x.com composer in a desktop browser has a schedule option that is widely reported to work for any logged-in account, though X publishes no help article for it. The schedulers X does document are X Pro, which X lists as a Premium+ feature, and the X Ads composer. The X app is widely reported to have no schedule option.

Can you schedule a tweet on the X mobile app?

No. The X app has no schedule option. That is widely reported, and X’s own iPhone and Android posting steps mention none. Schedule from the x.com composer in a browser instead, from X Pro if you have Premium+, or from a scheduling tool.

How do I see or edit my scheduled tweets on X?

On x.com, scheduled posts are widely reported to sit in the composer under Unsent posts, on a Scheduled tab, where you can open one to edit it. X has no help article for that path. In X Pro, X’s documented route is to add a Scheduled column (navigation bar > Add column > Scheduled), where you can view and edit scheduled posts.

How far in advance can you schedule X posts?

X doesn’t say. No X help page states a scheduling window for the x.com composer, for X Pro or for the X Ads composer. Figures quoted by scheduling-tool vendors are not published by X, so treat any window you see as unconfirmed.

Can you schedule a thread on X?

X doesn’t say. No X help page states whether a thread, a poll or a reply can be scheduled from the x.com composer, and X Pro’s help lists posts with images or video without mentioning threads. Some third-party tools advertise thread scheduling; Outfeed does not, as it publishes single text posts to X.

Is X Pro (TweetDeck) free?

No. X’s Premium page lists “Access to X Pro” under “Only for Premium+ Tier”. With it you can schedule posts with images or video for each of several X accounts connected to X Pro, and view and edit them in a Scheduled column.
