How to Make Your Twitter (X) Account Public Again
Turn off Protect your posts. You’ll find it in Settings and privacy, under Privacy and safety, then Audience and tagging, on x.com and in the X app. Before you switch, accept any follow requests you want to keep, because X won’t approve them for you, and remember that every post you made while protected becomes public.
Most of the confusion is vocabulary. X never says “private account”: it says protected posts, so going public means unprotecting them. Below are X’s steps, what changes for old posts and pending requests, and a short checklist for before you switch. Our hub on what changed when Twitter became X covers the rest of the rename.

How to make Twitter account public on X
Go to Protect your posts and switch it off. X publishes one set of steps for both directions. They’re written for protecting your posts, so follow them to the setting, then do the opposite at the last step:
In the X app on iPhone:
- In the top menu, tap your profile photo, then tap Settings and privacy.
- Tap Privacy and safety.
- Under Audience and tagging, and next to Protect your posts, drag the slider to turn on.
In the X app on Android:
- In the top menu, you will either see a navigation menu icon or your profile icon. Tap whichever icon you have and select Settings and privacy.
- Tap Privacy and safety.
- Under Audience and tagging, and next to Protect your Posts, check the box.
On x.com (computer):
- Click or tap on the more icon.
- Go to your Settings and privacy.
- Go to Privacy and safety.
- Go to Audience and tagging, and next to Protect your posts, check the box.

At the last step, switch it off instead. On the web, uncheck the box (X’s unprotect note calls it Protect my posts); in the iPhone and Android apps, drag the slider or uncheck the box next to Protect your posts. X’s help page names the section Audience and tagging. Menu labels can differ between app versions, so if yours reads differently, look for Protect your posts under Privacy and safety.
Public vs protected posts on X
Public is the default: anyone can see your posts, with or without an X account. Protected posts are visible only to your followers, and new followers need your approval. Here’s what else differs:
| Public (default) | Protected | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees your posts | Anyone, even without an X account | Only your followers |
| New followers | Anyone can follow | You approve or deny each request |
| Reposts and quotes | Allowed | Followers can’t repost or quote you |
| X search | Your posts can appear | Only you and your followers can find them |
| Google and other search engines | Not excluded | Kept out |
| Your replies to non-followers | Visible to them | Not seen by them |

What happens when you make your account public?
Everything you posted while protected becomes public, and follow requests still pending aren’t accepted for you. X says unprotecting makes any previously protected posts public, and requests left pending are not accepted automatically: those accounts will need to follow you again. The protected-only limits end too. Anyone can repost and quote your posts, people who don’t follow you can see your replies, and X no longer keeps your posts out of search engines such as Google. Before you go public: a quick checklist
Before you flip the setting, answer pending follow requests and review what will become public. Five checks, in order:
- Answer pending follow requests. Accept the ones you want before you switch; the rest won’t be approved for you.
- See what’s about to go public. Request your X archive: in the app, Settings and privacy, then Account, then Your X data; on x.com, Your account, then Download an archive of your data. X says it can take a few days and arrives as a .zip file. Checked against X Help Center: How to download your X archiveArchived copy, 1 October 2026 View the archived copy
- Deal with posts you’d rather not publish. Every protected post becomes public at once, so handle anything you want kept out of view first.
- Relax about likes. X made likes private for everyone in June 2024: you can still see posts you’ve liked, but others can’t. - Know that media links were never protected. X says links to media shared on X aren’t protected, even on a protected account: anyone with the link can view the content. Checked against X Help Center: About public and protected PostsArchived copy, 19 September 2026 View the archived copy

How to make your X account private again
Run the same steps and turn Protect your posts back on. New followers will then need your approval, but anyone who followed you while you were public keeps access unless you block them. Posts you made while public stop being public on X and drop out of public X search: only you and your followers can view and search them on X.

FAQ
What happens to follow requests when I make my X account public?
They aren’t accepted automatically. X says requests still pending when you unprotect your posts won’t be accepted for you, and those accounts will need to follow you again. Review your pending requests and accept the ones you want before you make your account public.
Will my old protected posts become public?
Yes. X says unprotecting your posts makes any previously protected posts public, so everything you posted while protected becomes visible to anyone, including people without an X account. If there are posts you’d rather not make public, deal with them before you switch the setting off.
Can people see my likes if my X account is public?
No. X made likes private for everyone in June 2024. You can still see the posts you’ve liked in the Likes tab on your profile, but other people can’t, whether your account is public or protected. Like counts still show on posts.
Will my posts show up on Google if my X account is public?
They can. X keeps protected posts out of third-party search engines such as Google and makes them searchable on X only by you and your followers. Making your account public turns your previously protected posts into public ones, so those protections no longer apply to them.
How do I make my X account private again?
Go to Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then Audience and tagging, and turn Protect your posts back on. New followers will then need your approval, but accounts that already follow you keep access unless you block them. Your posts will be visible only to your followers.
