Threads App vs Twitter (X): A 2026 Comparison Chart

Threads and X both run on short public posts, so a Threads app vs Twitter comparison comes down to limits: every Threads account gets 500-character posts, five-minute videos and a 15-minute edit window, while X caps posts at 280 characters unless you pay for X Premium. X counters with end-to-end encrypted Chat and a deeper advanced search.

Every row below comes from Meta’s or X’s own pages, posts and developer docs, with the date it was checked. The rename itself is covered in what changed when Twitter became X, and if Meta’s app is new to you, start with what Threads is.

Threads vs Twitter (X): the short answer

Threads and X share the same core features: short public posts, replies, reposts, quotes, polls, direct messages and a way to hide your posts from people who don’t follow you. In a Threads vs X choice, the real differences sit in four places:

  • Length. 500 characters on Threads, 280 on X without Premium.
  • What you pay for. On X, editing, longer posts and longer videos come with X Premium. Threads includes a 15-minute edit window, a 10,000-character text attachment and five-minute videos.
  • Sign-up. Every Threads profile is created with an Instagram or Facebook account; an X account stands alone.
  • Openness. Threads can share your posts to the fediverse through ActivityPub, as an opt-in beta outside the European Region. X documents no open-protocol connection.

Threads app vs Twitter comparison chart

This Threads app vs Twitter comparison chart covers 16 features as Meta and X document them. Dates show when a feature arrived or a figure was announced, and the source lines under the chart show which page backs each row and when it was checked.

Where Threads is stronger

Threads is more generous by default. Longer text, editing and five-minute videos are part of every Threads account, where X ties its versions to X Premium, and Threads is the one of the two that can connect to the fediverse.

  • Room to write. 500 characters per post, plus a text attachment of up to 10,000 characters that people read without leaving Threads.
  • Edits for everyone. You can fix a post’s text within 15 minutes of posting, though attachments can’t be added or removed.
  • More media per post. Up to 10 photos or videos in the app and videos up to 5 minutes long, against X’s 4 media items and, without Premium, 140 seconds.
  • Communities. Public spaces built on topic tags and custom feeds, out of beta since 16 June 2026. Membership is public.
  • Feeds you build. Custom feeds made from topics and profiles sit beside For You and Following.
  • An optional open network. With fediverse sharing, people on Mastodon and other ActivityPub servers can follow, view and interact with your Threads posts. It’s an opt-in beta for public profiles created with Instagram, 18 and over, outside the European Region. Checked against Instagram Help Center (Threads): About Threads and the fediverse
  • Posts that don’t stick around. Ghost posts archive themselves after 24 hours and send replies to your messaging inbox, where only you see who liked and replied (since 27 October 2025). Checked against About Meta newsroom: Introducing Disappearing Posts on Threads
  • An easy start from Instagram. You join with your Instagram account, and a verified Instagram account’s badge shows on the Threads profile.

Where X is stronger

X has the higher ceilings and the deeper tools. The biggest limits sit behind X Premium, such as long posts and video uploads measured in hours, and X adds end-to-end encrypted Chat and a deeper advanced search.

  • Longer posts with Premium. X’s Premium page says subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters, more than a Threads post plus its attachment, though X’s How to Post page still says 4,000.
  • Hours of video with Premium. Without Premium it’s 140 seconds and 512 MB. With Premium, X’s videos page says under 4 hours and 16 GB, while its Premium page says about 3 hours and 8 GB, on x.com and iOS only.
  • A longer edit window. Premium subscribers get up to five edits within an hour of posting an original post or quote; replying to your own post ends editing.
  • Encrypted messages. Chat encrypts messages, links, media and reactions end to end, with a key protected by a 4-digit PIN. Metadata such as the recipient and time isn’t encrypted, and messages to someone who hasn’t registered for Chat are sent unencrypted.
  • Deeper search. X’s advanced search filters by words, people, places and dates, back to the first public post, where Threads’ filters cover a profile and a date range.
  • Longer polls. An X poll can stay open from 5 minutes to 7 days; a Threads poll runs for 24 hours.
  • A standalone account. X needs no other account, while every Threads profile is created with an Instagram or Facebook account.

Does Threads have more users than X?

Not on any official like-for-like figure. Meta announced on 16 June 2026 that Threads had reached 500 million monthly active users. X’s most recent global figure in its own words is older: Elon Musk posted on 23 May 2024 that X had 600 million monthly active users. Both are company-stated, not audited, and two years apart, so they can’t settle which app is bigger. X also reports a dated, EU-only number under the Digital Services Act: 64,727,103 average monthly active recipients in the EU from January to June 2026, in a report published on 31 August 2026. It covers EU countries only, so don’t set it beside a global total. Checked against X Transparency Center: DSA Transparency Report, H1 2026 (published 31 August 2026)

Third-party analytics firms publish estimates for both apps, but they aren’t company figures. Treat any headline saying one app has passed the other as an estimate.

Which should you use?

Pick by where your audience is and by the limit you’d hit first; neither app wins on every count.

  • Your audience is on Instagram: Threads. You join with your Instagram account, and a verified Instagram badge carries over.
  • You write long: either. Any Threads account can attach up to 10,000 characters; on X, longer posts need Premium.
  • You post video: Threads gives every account five minutes; X gives 140 seconds without Premium and hours with it.
  • You research live conversations: X’s advanced search reaches back to the first public post and filters by place, and Lists give you timelines of chosen accounts. Threads search finds posts by keyword and filters them by profile and date range.
  • Privacy matters most: both let you hide posts from people who don’t follow you, with a private profile on Threads or protected posts on X. For messages, X documents end-to-end encryption for Chat, metadata excluded.
  • You want an open network: Threads’ fediverse sharing works outside the European Region. Bluesky is built on an open protocol of its own; see Bluesky vs Twitter (X).

To learn the app before you commit, how to use Threads covers posting, replies and settings.

Posting to Threads and X from one place

You can keep both accounts active without writing everything twice, as long as each version fits its own network’s text limit: 500 characters on Threads, 280 on X without Premium. Whatever tool you use should publish through each network’s official API, never by sharing your password or automating the app.

FAQ

Can you use Threads without Instagram?

Yes, if you have a Facebook account. Meta’s Help Center says you create a Threads profile by signing in with an Instagram or Facebook account, one profile per account, and it documents no way to join without either. Profiles created with Facebook can’t turn on fediverse sharing, and a verified Facebook badge doesn’t carry over to Threads.

What is the character limit on Threads vs X?

A Threads post holds 500 characters, and since September 2025 Meta has been rolling out text attachments of up to 10,000 characters. X allows 280 characters without Premium. Premium subscribers can post more, but X’s own help pages disagree on how much: 25,000 characters on its Premium page and 4,000 on its How to Post page.

Does Threads have DMs?

Yes. Threads added direct messages on 1 July 2025, announced message requests from people you don’t follow on 12 September 2025, and added group chats of up to 50 people on 15 October 2025, when messaging also began rolling out in the EU. X’s equivalent, Chat, encrypts messages end to end with a key protected by a 4-digit PIN.

Can you edit a post on Threads and on X?

On Threads, anyone can edit the text of a post or reply within 15 minutes of posting, but attachments can’t be added or removed. On X, editing is part of X Premium: subscribers can edit an original post or quote up to five times within one hour, and replying to your own post ends editing.

Is Threads better than Twitter (X)?

Neither is better for everyone. Threads gives every account 500-character posts, five-minute videos and a 15-minute edit window, and you join with Instagram or Facebook. X keeps longer posts, editing and longer videos for Premium subscribers, but adds end-to-end encrypted Chat and an advanced search that reaches back to the first public post. Pick the one where your audience already is.
