What Are Impressions on X? Views vs Impressions

Impressions on X count how many times a post was shown, and X reports them for each of your posts in its free Post Activity Dashboard, next to engagements and engagement rate. The public number beside the analytics icon on most posts is a separate count called views, which X tallies for any logged-in viewer, repeat views and the author’s own included.

Searching for tweet impressions or Twitter impressions? It’s the same metric: tweets became posts when Twitter became X.

What are impressions on X?

Impressions are the times a post was shown, listed per post in X’s analytics. X’s dashboard glossary words its definition for advertisers, “Times people were served an ad across any of X’s various display surface areas”, yet the same dashboard reports impressions for organic posts too. The real trap is that X shows two numbers that sound alike: the public view count and your dashboard impressions. Other networks define the word their own way, as LinkedIn’s impressions show.

Views vs impressions on X

Views are public; impressions sit in your own dashboard. Anyone on X can see a post’s view count, while impressions appear in the Post Activity Dashboard. X doesn’t document whether the two are counted the same way, so they may not match.

What counts as a view on X?

Any look at a post by someone logged in to X, wherever they see it and whether or not they follow the author. X’s View counts help page sets out the rules:

  • Logged-in viewers count everywhere: on Home, in Search, on profiles and elsewhere.
  • The author’s views count. “If you’re the author, looking at your own post also counts as a view.”
  • Repeat views count. In X’s example, looking at a post on the web and then on your phone is two views.
  • Embeds don’t. A post embedded on a website adds nothing to its view count.
  • New counts lag. X says a count can take up to a minute to appear after posting.

So a view count isn’t a head count: X says view counts show “the reach of your posts”, yet one person can add several views. Read it as times viewed, not people reached.

Where can you see your X impressions?

In X’s Post Activity Dashboard: on analytics.x.com, open the Posts tab; on ads.x.com, choose Analytics, then Post activity. It shows the last 28 days by default, with impressions, engagements and engagement rate for each post. X Business calls X Analytics, including this dashboard, “a free service available to all X users who have an ads account and/or register at analytics.X.com”.

  • Promoted posts get two rows: organic metrics first, then promoted.
  • Video has its own dashboard (More > Videos on analytics.x.com), and its view rate has its own definition: a video watched “in 50% view for 2 seconds or more”, or expanded or unmuted.
  • No data at all? X says the likely reason is that the account was found in violation of the X Rules, its account best practices or its ads policies.

How does X calculate engagement rate?

X divides engagements by impressions. Its dashboard glossary defines engagement rate as “The number of engagements divided by the number of impressions”, and counts as engagements any clicks on the post, including reposts, replies, follows, likes, links, embedded media, the username, the profile photo and expanding the post.

With made-up round numbers, as an illustration only: 50 engagements on 2,000 impressions is 50 ÷ 2,000 = 2.5%. The dashboard already shows each post’s rate, and X’s dashboard help sets no benchmark for a good one, so compare a post with your own earlier posts. Rates by reach, followers or views are compared in how to calculate engagement rate.

Why are my X impressions low?

Check the causes X documents first: protected posts, posts that never show a view count, numbers that are still settling, and the reach limits X applies to rule-breaking.

  • Protected posts: only followers see them, followers can’t repost or quote them, and they stay out of Google. Checked against X Help Center: About public and protected PostsArchived copy, 19 September 2026 View the archived copy
  • No count at all: Community posts, X Circle posts and older posts carry no view count, which isn’t the same as zero views.
  • Settling numbers: X says dashboard metrics can fluctuate for up to 36 hours.
  • Restricted reach: under X’s Authenticity policy, X can exclude rule-breaking posts from search results and trends or remove them from the For You and Following timelines. Checked against X Help Center: AuthenticityArchived copy, 23 September 2026 View the archived copy

What you can change is what you post and when: our guide to the best time to post on Twitter (X) and our X marketing strategy guide cover both.

Don’t buy impressions. The same policy bans engagement exchanges and paying others to inflate metrics, Views among them, as well as using or promoting third-party services that do either.

FAQ

What counts as an impression on X?

X’s dashboard glossary words the definition for ads: “Times people were served an ad across any of X’s various display surface areas”. The dashboard reports impressions for organic posts too, so read the number as the times a post was shown. The public view count shown on posts is a separate number.

What is the difference between impressions and views on X?

Views are the public count on posts: X counts each view by a logged-in person, repeat views and the author’s own included, but not views of embedded posts. Impressions are the per-post figure in X’s free Post Activity Dashboard. X doesn’t document whether the two are counted the same way.

Does viewing your own post count as a view on X?

Yes. X’s View counts help page says that if you’re the author, looking at your own post also counts as a view. Views aren’t unique either: in X’s example, looking at a post on the web and then on your phone counts as two views.

Is X analytics free?

X Business says so: “X Analytics, including the Post Activity Dashboard, is a free service available to all X users who have an ads account and/or register at analytics.X.com” (checked 3 October 2026). Per-post impressions are on the Posts tab at analytics.x.com, or under Analytics > Post activity at ads.x.com.

Do impressions on X pay creators?

They can, through X’s Original Content Rewards program, which X’s Premium page lists for Premium and Premium+ subscribers who meet its eligibility requirements. X says payouts are “calculated based on qualified impressions from Premium users with your content on X”.
