How to Schedule Social Media Posts on 9 Platforms (2026)
Last verified: 30 September 2026
How to schedule social media posts: write the post, pick the account, set the date, time and time zone, then confirm. The network, or a tool publishing through its API, posts it on time. Seven of these nine networks document a free built-in scheduler. X documents one only in X Pro (Premium+) and its Ads composer. Bluesky has none.
Every network also sets its own limits: how far ahead, who qualifies, which formats, and whether you can edit afterwards. The table below puts all nine side by side, checked against each platform’s help pages on 30 September 2026.

What does scheduling a social media post actually do?
Scheduling hands a finished post to a system that publishes it at a time you set, whether or not you’re online. With a network’s own scheduler, the post waits in that network’s scheduled list, where you can usually edit or move it. With a third-party tool, the tool holds the post and publishes it through the network’s API when the time comes. Either way, nobody has to press Post.
That is all a “social media auto poster” is: whatever the label (autopost, auto-publish), the job is publishing on a timer. Queues that fill preset slots or re-share old posts are an extra on top.
The distinction that matters more is auto-publish versus reminder. When a tool can’t publish a format through a network’s API, some tools fall back to a notification at the scheduled time and you post it yourself. When a tool says it “supports” a format, check which one you get.
Where the post is held decides where you see it. Outfeed’s posts, for example, don’t appear in Meta Business Suite, YouTube Studio or TikTok’s own scheduled lists, because Outfeed publishes them itself.
Which platforms let you schedule posts natively?
Eight of the nine major networks offer scheduling of their own; Bluesky is the only one with none. Seven document it in a help centre or an official post. X’s help centre documents scheduling only in X Pro, which X’s Premium page lists as a Premium+ feature, and in the X Ads composer. The calendar icon in the ordinary x.com composer is widely reported, but X has no help article for it.

Widely reported: observable and widely reported, but no page from the platform says it. · Not verified: the platform does not publish it, or it could not be confirmed.
Each row is the free route to try first, with its source linked. “Widely reported” marks behaviour people observe but the platform doesn’t document; “Not stated by the platform” means we left the cell empty rather than fill it from a vendor blog. The Outfeed column comes from our own publishing code.
One line per network, with its full walkthrough:
- Instagram. In the app, under More options, from a public account. Instagram’s article lists photos, carousels and Reels, not Stories; the documented route for Stories is Meta Business Suite. See how to schedule Instagram posts and Reels and scheduling Instagram Stories.

The other 13 scheduling surfaces
Most networks have more than one place to schedule, and some places people expect a scheduler document none. This table covers the rest. Where Outfeed can’t publish at all (a personal Facebook profile, a Facebook group, a LinkedIn Page), its column says so.

How to schedule social media posts, step by step
How to schedule a post comes down to six steps on every network, native or not: choose the account, create the post, adapt it, set the date, time and time zone, preview, then confirm and check the queue. The buttons differ; the order doesn’t.
- Pick the account, and check it qualifies. Instagram’s scheduler needs a public account, and Pinterest’s a business account. Facebook documents scheduling for Pages, pro-mode profiles and groups you manage, not for a standard profile. On a LinkedIn Page, only super admins and content admins can schedule.
- Create the post. Planning a month rather than one post? Lay it out in the free content calendar template, which exports each post as a calendar event. Short on material? Start from social media post ideas by platform, or turn a topic into three drafts with the social media post creator.
- Adapt it for the network. A LinkedIn caption reads oddly on Threads, and an image cropped for one feed gets cut off in another. Our social media image sizes table has every network’s sizes, and the failures section below covers formats that can’t be scheduled at all.
- Set the date, time and time zone. Meta Business Suite uses your current time zone for Page posts. LinkedIn works from your device’s time zone, in 30-minute increments or an exact time you type. TikTok defaults to your computer’s setting. YouTube asks you to choose. Convert first if your audience lives elsewhere, and see the best time to post on social media for when.
- Preview. Most native composers preview only their own network. Check crops, captions cut off behind “more” and link previews, once for each version.
- Confirm, then find it in the queue. Each network keeps scheduled posts somewhere different:
| Where | Find scheduled posts |
|---|---|
| Instagram app (iPhone and Android) | Profile > Menu (top right) > under 'Your insights and tools' > Scheduled content. Or Create > Post or Reel > Scheduled. |
| Facebook Page, via Meta Business Suite (desktop) | From your Page: Meta Business Suite (left menu) > Create post > Planner (left menu); click the post on the Week/Month calendar, then Options. |
| TikTok on desktop web (the upload page / TikTok Studio in a browser) | Your Profile view (desktop). You get a push notification when a scheduled video goes live. |
| LinkedIn personal profile (homepage 'Start a post') | Start a post > Clock icon > View all scheduled posts (lower-left of the Schedule post window). |
| x.com composer in a desktop browser Widely reported | Reported: composer > Unsent posts > Scheduled tab. |
| YouTube Studio (desktop) and the YouTube app: videos | YouTube Studio > Content (left menu) > select the video > Visibility. |
| Pinterest business account (web Pin builder and app) | Your profile, above your published Pins (may take a few minutes to appear). Delete via the ellipsis icon. |
| Threads composer (app) | Your drafts folder, with a note showing when each is scheduled to publish. Source for this value |
| Bluesky app and bsky.app web No native scheduler | No native scheduler |
Widely reported: observable and widely reported, but no page from the platform says it.
Can you schedule posts on every platform for free?
On seven networks, yes: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest and Threads include a scheduler at no cost, with eligibility rules attached. X’s documented routes are X Pro, a Premium+ feature, and the Ads composer; the free x.com option is widely reported but undocumented. Bluesky has no scheduler, so scheduling there always means a third-party tool.
“Free” still has costs:
- Up to nine composers and nine queues. Among the networks’ own tools, only Meta Business Suite spans more than one network: Facebook and Instagram, plus a Threads cross-post option on desktop.
- Eligibility you can’t always predict. TikTok describes who can use its desktop scheduler in two different ways, both quoted in our TikTok guide, so check what your own account shows.
- Device limits. TikTok documents general scheduling on desktop web only, Facebook’s pro-mode scheduling works on mobile only, and the X app reportedly doesn’t schedule at all.
- Bluesky points elsewhere. Its blog announced a scheduling and cross-posting partnership with Buffer in July 2024, rather than adding a scheduler of its own.
For one or two networks, use the native tools. A paid tool pays off when switching between composers costs more time than the subscription costs money, or when Bluesky is in your mix. Our ranking of the best social media scheduler options compares queues, bulk tools and post caps, and the affordable social media scheduler guide covers the cheap end.
How do you schedule one post to several platforms at once?
Among the networks’ own tools, only Meta Business Suite can: it schedules one post to a Facebook Page and an Instagram account together, with different text for each. To schedule posts on all your socials, including LinkedIn, TikTok, X, YouTube, Pinterest, Threads and Bluesky, you need a cross-platform tool that holds the post and publishes it to each network through its API.
The decision underneath is crosspost or adapt. Crossposting sends identical text and media everywhere: fast, and fine for a simple announcement. Adapting keeps the idea but repackages it for each network. Our guide to managing multiple social media accounts has the full keep, adapt and never-copy checklist and a weekly workflow. For scheduling, the rule is simple: pick a tool that can vary the text per network.
Meta’s setting that shares Facebook posts to Instagram automatically is a different mechanism from scheduling one post to both accounts; see how to share Facebook posts to Instagram.
Bulk scheduling, a week or a month of posts in one sitting, is where native tools are thinnest. Pinterest’s limit: Up to 10 Pins scheduled at once; schedule one Pin at a time. Facebook groups offer recurring daily, weekly or monthly posts through Admin Assist, for admins only. To map out the month before you bulk-schedule it, see the social media planner guide.
How far in advance can you schedule social media posts?
Between 10 days and 3 months, depending on the network. Facebook Pages allow 29 days, Instagram 30 days and Pinterest 30 days. YouTube, Threads and X publish no maximum. When one batch covers several networks natively, the shortest window among them is your real ceiling.
Network by network, with the shortest lead time where one is published:
- TikTok: from 15 minutes to 10 days ahead. A 30-day figure belongs to TikTok Shop’s separate scheduler for sellers; the TikTok guide untangles the two.
- Facebook Pages: 20 minutes to 29 days in Meta Business Suite. Meta states no window for pro-mode profiles, groups, or Instagram content scheduled in Business Suite, so don’t assume the Page figure carries over.
- Instagram: up to 30 days, capped at 25 posts a day, with no published minimum. A 75-day figure is Instagram’s wording from before February 2026; the Instagram guide has the dated change.
- Pinterest: up to 30 days, with the queue limit noted above.
- LinkedIn: 10 minutes to 3 months from a profile, and 1 hour to 3 months from a Page.
- YouTube, Threads and X: no published maximum. “Unlimited” isn’t YouTube’s word, and no Meta page gives a Threads window.
- Bluesky: no scheduler, so no window.
How far ahead should you schedule? No platform recommends a lead time, so treat windows as ceilings. Stay closer to the date for anything that might change: a scheduled TikTok, or a post scheduled in Facebook’s mobile app, has to be deleted and recreated to change it, and news, prices or dates can go stale while they wait. Evergreen posts can sit at the edge of the window.
Do scheduled posts get less reach than posting live?
No platform says so. None of the nine networks publishes a reach or engagement penalty for scheduled posts, and eight of them offer scheduling themselves. The claim circulates without a platform source. What can differ is what you’re able to attach to a scheduled post, and when it lands.
No published penalty isn’t proof of zero effect, and platforms publish no data either way. To test your own account, schedule half your posts and publish half live for a month, with comparable formats and times.
The differences that are real:
- Feature gaps. Instagram’s scheduler can’t take posts with product tagging, collaborative posts, sponsored posts or fundraisers. Tools that publish through an API can have bigger gaps; Outfeed, for example, adds no Instagram music and no TikTok sounds.
- Settings are frozen. Instagram says scheduled content keeps the privacy and audience settings in place when you scheduled it, so changing those settings later doesn’t change posts already in the queue.
- A current limit in our own tool. Outfeed’s TikTok posts currently publish as private (see below): a real reach limit, caused by TikTok’s app review, not by scheduling.
- Timing and presence. A post that lands at 3 a.m. for your audience, with nobody around to reply, will likely do worse, for reasons unrelated to scheduling.
Why do scheduled posts fail to publish?
Most documented failures trace to four causes: the account or channel no longer qualifies, the format isn’t schedulable, a change was made that the network doesn’t allow, or, with a third-party tool, the connection broke or the post breaks a network’s rules. These are the rules with a source (if Facebook won’t let you post at all, even by hand, see why you can’t post on Facebook):
- Channel penalties. YouTube’s scheduling help says a scheduled video won’t publish while the channel is under a Community Guidelines strike penalty. It is set to private, and you have to reschedule it.
- Eligibility. Instagram’s scheduler requires a public account. Facebook profiles need pro mode, per Meta’s help page on scheduling Facebook posts. On TikTok Shop, private videos can’t be scheduled.
- Formats the scheduler refuses. X says longer posts cannot yet be scheduled. LinkedIn Pages can’t schedule events, multiple photos, reshares, polls, jobs or service posts, and profiles can’t schedule events, jobs or services. X Pro doesn’t schedule Direct Messages.
- Edits that aren’t allowed. Besides TikTok and Facebook’s mobile app (above), Pinterest won’t let you change a scheduled Pin’s image or video.
- Caps. Instagram stops at 25 posts a day. YouTube says a daily upload limit exists but doesn’t publish the number. TikTok Shop allows 50 scheduled videos per account at a time.
With a third-party tool, the usual culprits are a disconnected account, text over a network’s limit or rejected media. Outfeed checks all of these, plus required fields such as YouTube’s made-for-kids answer, before accepting a post into the schedule, so problems surface then, not hours later.
At publish time, each network goes out independently: if one fails, the others still publish and the post is marked partial, naming the network that failed. Temporary failures (rate limits, network errors, a network being down) are retried after about 1, 5 and 15 minutes, at most 4 attempts in all, and Outfeed checks whether the post already went live before retrying, to avoid double-posting. Login and content problems aren’t retried; you’re told what to fix.
Scheduling across all nine networks from one chat with Outfeed AI
Outfeed AI is the cross-platform layer for when nine composers, not a missing scheduler, is the problem. You tell it, in chat or in the composer, what to post, to which accounts, and at what exact date, time and time zone. At that moment it publishes each network’s version through that network’s API.
What it does, per Outfeed’s publishing code:
- Different text per network, in one post. Write a main version and override it for specific networks.
- Any time zone. Times are read in the IANA zone you give, such as America/Toronto, with daylight saving handled. The time must be in the future.
- You confirm. In chat, nothing is scheduled or published until you confirm. A scheduled post can be edited (text, media, accounts, time) until it starts publishing, cancelled and rescheduled later, or published immediately.
- No automatic queue or best-time auto-scheduling: you, or the assistant on your instruction, choose the time.
- Bulk scheduling lays a batch out daily, on weekdays, weekly or on chosen days at a set time. It is on Pro, Agency and Enterprise, not Starter.
You could type: “Schedule this launch post with the attached image for Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. America/New_York on Instagram, LinkedIn and Threads. Make the LinkedIn version longer and leave hashtags off it.” The assistant asks you to confirm first. More on how that works: scheduling by conversation with an AI social media scheduler.
What it won’t do:
- TikTok posts from Outfeed currently publish as private, visible only to the connected account, while TikTok reviews the Outfeed app. They don’t reach followers yet.
- X is text-only (no images, GIFs or video) and capped per billing period by plan. Once the cap is reached, new X posts are refused until the next period or an upgrade.
- Bluesky connects with an app password, which Outfeed stores encrypted. Use an app password, never your main Bluesky password.
- No Instagram or Facebook Stories, Facebook Reels, personal Facebook profiles or groups, LinkedIn Company Pages, polls or first comments, and no Shorts option for YouTube.
One scheduled post counts as one post against your monthly limit however many accounts it targets; X counts separately.
Starter is $29/mo: 10 accounts, 100 posts a month, 1 team member. Pro is $59/mo: 25 accounts, unlimited posts, 3 team members. Starter and Pro are flat monthly prices, not billed per seat. Agency is $149 per seat/mo, with 250 accounts shared across the organization; Enterprise is custom. Every plan covers all nine networks. Starter includes a 3-day free trial with 100 AI credits. Card required. Pro and Agency are billed from the first day.

Frequently asked questions
How far in advance can you schedule social media posts?
It depends on each network’s own scheduler. TikTok allows 15 minutes to 10 days ahead on desktop web, Facebook Pages 20 minutes to 29 days in Meta Business Suite, Instagram and Pinterest up to 30 days, and LinkedIn profiles 10 minutes to 3 months. YouTube, Threads and X publish no maximum, and Bluesky has no scheduler.
Do scheduled posts get less reach than posting live?
No platform says so. None of the nine major networks publishes a reach or engagement penalty for scheduled posts, and eight of them offer scheduling themselves. What can differ is what you can attach: Instagram’s scheduler, for example, can’t schedule posts with product tagging, collaborative posts, sponsored posts or fundraisers.
Can I schedule posts on all social media platforms for free?
On most of them. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest and Threads have built-in schedulers, each with its own eligibility rules, such as a public Instagram account or a Pinterest business account. X documents scheduling only in X Pro (Premium+) and its Ads composer, though the ordinary x.com composer on desktop has a schedule option that is widely reported to work. Bluesky has no scheduler, so it needs a third-party tool.
Why don’t posts scheduled in a tool show up in the network’s own scheduler?
Because a third-party tool usually holds the post itself and publishes it through the network’s API when the time comes, instead of handing it to the network’s scheduler. A post scheduled in Outfeed, for example, won’t appear in Meta Business Suite, YouTube Studio or TikTok’s scheduled list, so you edit or cancel it in the tool.
What happens if a scheduled post fails to publish?
It depends where it was scheduled. YouTube won’t publish a scheduled video while the channel has a Community Guidelines strike penalty; the video is set to private and must be rescheduled. In Outfeed, temporary errors are retried after about 1, 5 and 15 minutes, 4 attempts at most, and if one network fails the others still publish.
